Grinnell’s Depth Leads Them to Second Straight Championship

GRINNELL, Iowa – All five scorers for the Grinnell College women’s cross country team earned All-Midwest Conference honors and the Pioneers won their second straight Midwest Conference championship at Reid Municipal Golf Course in Appleton, Wis. on Saturday. 

Results

Monmouth College senior Kyra Kimber led the field with a time 21:50.63, while Grinnell head coach Evelyn Freeman was named the Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. 

Grinnell finished with 57 points and was led by Alosha Southern (23:03.41) and Paulina Campbell (23:05.06) who finished seventh and eighth, respectively.  In 10th, was senior Diana Seer (23:08.84) and Emma Luhmann crossed the finish line in 15th (23:24.81).  Clare Roberts completed the scoring for the Pioneers in 17th (23:32.62). 

St. Norbert College came in second with 67 points.  The Green Knights had four runners earn All-MWC honors, which includes the top-20 finishers.  Charlotte Walsh (22:43.23) and Erin Artz (22:48.43) finished in fourth and fifth to lead St. Norbert, while freshman Lisa Baeten came in 14th (32:21.97).  Alyssa Price (16th, 23:31.49) was the Green Knights’ fourth all-conference runner and Sarah Price finished the scoring for St. Norbert in 28th (23:55.94). 

Lawrence University had three runners crack the top-20 on its way to a third place finish.  The hosts were led by Cora Williams (11th, 23:10.43) and Erin Schrobilgen (23:14.21).  Clare Bruning also earned all-conference honors with a 19th place finish (23:38.24).

Abrah Masterson and Sam Martinez of Cornell College finished second and third individually to lead the Rams to a fourth place finish.  Masterson crossed the tape in 21:51.07, while Martinez completed the 6,000 kilometer course in 22:00.35.  Also earning all-conference honors for the Rams was Rachel Moline after her 18th place finish (23:33.65). 

Lake Forest College finished in fifth for the second consecutive year.  The Foresters were led by Kristen Whitney in ninth (23:07.36) and Alexia Leonardo in 13th (23:20.83).  Just outside the top-20 were Andrea Lorch (21st, 23:43.25) and Cassie Lira (22nd 23:47.51). 

Karen Jones led the Beloit College contingent to a sixth place finish after she also finished sixth individually (22:56.25).  Led by Kimber, Monmouth finished seventh, while Carroll University’s Clare Swietlik finished 20th overall (23:40) to lead the Pioneers to eighth. 

Elizabeth Reyes crossed the finish line in 40th to lead ninth place Knox College.  Ana Flores led Illinois College with a 24th place finish (23:48.70) to put the Lady Blues in 10th and Ripon College finished 11th behind Karla Perez’s 27th place finish (23:55.17).
