GRINNELL, Iowa – After winning its first regular season Midwest Conference (MWC) Championship since 1988, the Knox College men’s soccer team took all four major awards handed out by the MWC. Nathaniel Logie was named the Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year and teammate Charles Edemba earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Prairie Fire’s Matt Edwards also took Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to this season, the Knox men’s soccer team had never won a major postseason Midwest Conference award. Logie was named the Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and a First Team All-MWC selection for a second straight season, after leading the league with 28 points, 13 goals and five game-winning goals.
Edemba scored four goals and led a defense that allowed an average of one goal per game and had six shutouts in league play. Edemba also earned a spot on the All-MWC First Team for the second consecutive year.
Matt Edwards guided the Prairie Fire to a school record 15 victories including a 13-match winning streak that is also the new standard in Galesburg. The regular season title was just the third in school history.
Joining Logie as First Team attackers were Carroll University’s Francisco Sajuan, Lake Forest College’s Elyas Ingram, Grinnell College’s Joey Brown, Illinois College’s Josue Hernandez, and St. Norbert College’s Sam Lamers.
Sajuan scored six goals and three assists to lead the MWC Tournament champions. Ingram led the league in shots (67) and finished the 2014 campaign in a tie for sixth in points with 16 on six goals and four assists.
Brown was named First Team All-MWC for the second time in his career, after earning the honor after his sophomore season. The senior tied for second in the conference with eight goals and third in the league in assists (7). Hernandez, a Second Team All-MWC pick in 2013, also finished the year with eight goals and added an assist for the Blueboys. Lamers led the most potent attack in the MWC this season, scoring seven goals and added seven assists for the Green Knights.
Defensively, Lake Forest’s Kyle Kraus and Carroll’s Connor Behnke were repeat First Team All-MWC selections, and Illinois College’s Andrew Matheney returns to the all-conference team after being a second team pick back in 2012.
Kraus had four assists from his defensive position and led a defense that produced five shutouts. Behnke helped a defense that finished in the middle of the pack in the conference, but did shutout seven opponents over the course of the season. Matheney was instrumental in getting Illinois College back in the MWC Tournament for the first time since 1993.
Grinnell’s Isaiah Tyree was named the First Team All-MWC goalie. The senior led the conference in save percentage (95.9%) and goals against average (0.22) and allowed just three goals in 1,241 minutes of action.
Second team attackers included Monmouth College’s Chizobam Nkemeh and Jake Cogan, Knox’s Abdulsalam Oganla, Lake Forest’s Dylan Harman, Lawrence University’s Cameron Pieper, and St. Norbert’s Tyler Kassube.
Stephen Salansky of Lawrence, Daniel Guzman of Monmouth, Thomas Gritton of St. Norbert, and Rockne Decoster of Grinnell were named second team defenders. Second Team All-MWC goalies included Knox’s Sean Dockrell and Beloit College’s BJ Kiser.
