Robinson leads Monmouth to 10th Straight Title

GRINNELL, Iowa – Raven Robinson was named one of the Outstanding Athletes of the Meet on Saturday as she led the Fighting Scots to their 10th consecutive Midwest Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Monmouth blew away the field on Friday and Saturday, scoring 213 points to second place Grinnell College’s 125.  St. Norbert College placed third with 109 points, while Carroll University (85) and Cornell College (75) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Robinson won the hammer throw (168’4”) and the shot put in a new meet record of 46’10”.  On Saturday, she also placed second in the discus to Carroll’s Lindsey Thomas (149’10”).  Teammate Emily Tysma defending her high jump title after clearing 5’6 ½”.  Morgan Ryan won the pole vault on Friday and also won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.14 this afternoon.

Alyssa Edwards added to the Monmouth haul after she topped the podium after winning the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.36.  The Fighting Scot 4x100-meter relay team of Kimarri Campbell, Lacey Hainline, Bailey Jackson and Briana Gardner set a new meet record after touring the track in just 47.84 seconds.  Because of their effort, Monmouth head coach Roger Haynes was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Grinnell’s Evenlyn Freeman. 

The Pioneers’ Sarah Burnell, Eloise Miller and Christine Ajinjeru were named Outstanding Athletes of the Meet.  Burnell won the 1,500-meter run in 4:35.44 on Friday and claimed the 800-meter run (2:12.69) on Saturday.  Burnell, Miller, Ajinjeru teamed up with Rachel Fritts to set a new meet record in the 4x400-meter relay (3:56.09) by edging out St. Norbert by just .01 seconds.

Ajinjeru set her own individual record in the 400-meter dash after completing her lap around the track in just 55.49 seconds.  Miller claimed the long jump after a 17’8 ¼” leap and the triple jump after leaping 38’ 1 ½”, over a foot over second-place Bailey Jackson of Monmouth. 

Beloit College’s Felicia Carlson was also named an Outstanding Athlete of the Meet after she won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes.  Carlson cruised the 100 in 12.42 seconds and completed the 200 in 24.96 seconds.  Carlson just nudged out Illinois College’s Chimdiofuma Eze-Echesi by just .02 seconds for the top honor. 

Cornell performed well in the distance events on Saturday as Sanjuanita Martinez won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:15.54) and Laurra Ettlin won the 5,000-meter run (18:29.61).
