Monmouth Wins 2014 Men's Golf Championship; Fenner Wins Individual Championship

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Monmouth made up a two shot deficit after the second day of action and shot a third day best 315 to win the 2014 Midwest Conference (MWC) Men’s Golf Championship. The Fightings Scots won by nine strokes over Carroll who finished the championship with 962 strokes.

St. Norbert finished in third with a score 969 with Lawrence in fourth with a score of 1,005. Grinnell finished in fifth with a three day score of 1,014 which was 11 shots better than Illinois Col. Knox rounded out the seven team field with a score of 1,080.

Knox’s James Fenner took home the individual championship by firing a three day score of 228 which includes a third day low 75. Fenner beat out Carroll’s Henry Mulvey by four strokes and Monmouth’s David Blake by seven shots. Both Jon Cohen (Grinnell) and Drake Decker (Monmouth) finished in a tie for fourth with a total score of 236.

Monmouth’s Dave Ragone was named MWC Coach of the Year following the tournament. The award was voted on by league coaches.

With the team championship the Fighting Scots earn the MWC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship which takes place May 13-16, 2014 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
