Lamers, Messerschmidt Earn Men’s Soccer Player of the Week Honors

GRINNELL, Iowa – Sophomore forward Sam Lamers of St. Norbert College was named the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Cody Messerschmidt of Ripon College took Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Lamers, an Appleton, Wis. native, led St. Norbert to a 2-0 win Sunday over UW-Platteville, its first victory over a WIAC school since 2006. Lamers assisted on the first goal of the game, 21 seconds into the match. He then gave St. Norbert a 2-0 lead with a finish in the fifth minute of the Green Knights’ season opener. Goalkeeper Scott Faul made nine saves to preserve the shutout for St. Norbert.
 
Messerschmidt, a native of Wausau, Wis., did not allow a goal in 155 minutes of action last week. That included a 0-0 tie at Lakeland College in which he saved nine saves in a double overtime tie.  The senior was also flawless for 45 minutes against Crown College.  The Red Hawks fell to Crown 3-1. 
 
As a league, the Conference finished the first weekend of action with a 6-9-2 combined record.  Tyler Sheikh has Illinois College off to a hot start.  The Blueboys recorded a 1-0 shutout against Coe College on Friday and followed that with a 16-0 demolition of Iowa Wesleyan College on Saturday. 

Connor Hagen and the Cornell College defense also recorded a shutout Rockford on Friday and finished with a 0-0 tie.  Knox College also won its season opener.  Charlie Harned scored two goals to lead the Prairie Fire over Blackburn, 4-2, on Friday.
