Carroll, Cornell and Macalester Represent Football Top Performers

GRINNELL, Iowa – Carroll University quarterback Kyle Burlingame, Macalester safety Alec Beatty and Cornell College kick Kaleb Whiting have all been named Midwest Conference Football Performers of the Week. 

Weekly Notes

The junior quarterback accounted for all six touchdowns in leading the Carroll football team to a 42-6 victory at Lawrence University. Burlingame passed for 243 yards and threw four touchdown passes. Two of his touchdown tosses went for 60-plus yards (65 and 64) to Kevin Jennings in the first half. He also added 76 yards on the ground and rushed for two touchdowns.

Beatty produced two of Macalester’s four interceptions to help the Scots shut down the potent Beloit College offense. Beatty also recovered a fumble in the first quarter and produced seven total tackles.
 
Whiting made good on 5-of-5 PAT kicks and converted his only field goal attempt, a 31-yarder, in Cornell's 38-16 road win over Knox College. Whiting moved into third place on Cornell's career list for made field goals with 16. He also ranks third with 91 successful PATs. On Saturday, Whiting averaged 51.3 yards on seven kickoffs.
 
Notable Offensive Performances
Tommie Dorsey had a career day with nine receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown in Cornell's 38-16 road win over Knox. The Ram freshman hauled in a 69-yard TD reception, marking the team's longest pass play of the season. Dorsey fueled a Ram offense that amassed 550 total yards. For the season, he has 20 receptions for 314 yards with three TDs.
 
Zandy Stowell scored all four of Macalester's touchdowns in a 28-14 victory over visiting Beloit. He also rushed for a season-best 196 yards on 31 carries for an average of 6.3 yards.
 
Jack Becker led St. Norbert's offense to a 48-14 rout of Ripon College Saturday. Becker accounted for 257 yards of total offense as the Green Knights accounted for 496 as a team. Becker completed 17 of 24 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 52 yards. He also caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brad Boockmeier in the first quarter. Becker's 57-yard touchdown pass to Matt Freeman on the game's first play from scrimmage gave the Green Knights a lead they would never relinquish. Becker also had touchdown passes of 19 and 18 yards.
 
Greg Cross was the leading rusher for Illinois College on a day when the Blueboys set a new school record for rushing yards in a single game. The sophomore needed only five carries to total 116 yards and two touchdowns. He had TD rushes of 18 yards and 84 yards and added a 19-yard kickoff return for a total of 135 all-purpose yards in the contest.
 
Notable Defensive Performances
Frank Laterza led a Green Knights defense that held Ripon to 214 yards of total offense. Laterza had two interceptions and finished with one tackle. Latzera's first interception came on the game's second play from scrimmage as the Red Hawks tried to answer a 7-0 deficit. The takeaway led to another St. Norbert scoring drive and a 14-0 lead. Laterza now has five interceptions this season.
 
Senior Dinari Ellis was one of the defensive standouts for Illinois College in an 83-10 win over Grinnell. The defensive back had three solo tackles and a pass breakup, but his biggest contribution came in the form of a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave IC a 20-3 lead in the second quarter.
 
Carl Olsen posted a career-high nine tackles and had an interception in Lawrence's homecoming game vs. Carroll. Olsen stopped a Carroll drive with an interception, the first of his career, in the Lawrence end zone. He had seven solo tackles among his game-high nine stops and recorded 2.0 TFLs for a loss of six yards.
 
Notable Special Teams Performances
Grinnell’s Graham Fisher had another solid day punting the ball, averaging 44.8 yards on six attempts. In addition, he also kicked a 42-yard field goal.
 
St. Norbert’s Spenser Thompson-Meyers made both field-goal attempts, tries of 26 and 42 yards. He also had nine kickoffs and averaged 61.7 yards per kickoff with four touchbacks. Ripon's average starting field position on his kickoffs was its own 26-yard line.
 
Zachary Bryson was kept busy on Saturday in Illinois College's 83-10 win over Grinnell. The sophomore placekicker went 11-for-12 on extra point attempts on the day. His one miss came on a Grinnell blocked kick straight up the gut of the offensive line.
