GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference (MWC) Champions, St. Norbert College, earned two of the four most valuable player honors while head coach Dan McCarty won his second straight North Division Coach of the Year award as the 2018 Football All-Conference Teams were announced.
Green Knights offensive lineman Kyle Rademaker was selected Offensive Line MVP after he helped St. Norbert post the conferences third best scoring offense (34.8) and second-highest rushing yards per game (222.5). Linebacker Matt Gurgone earned Defensive Skills MVP as he led a defense that allowed just 9.6 points per game. Gurgone recorded 53 tackles including 40 solo and 15 for a loss while forcing four fumbles and grabbing four interceptions.
Defensive Line MVP went to Monmouth College’s Thomas Lesniewski for the second time in his career as he led the conference with 13 sacks and set the Scots career record at 34.5 sacks. The defensive lineman had 58 tackles including second most for a loss at 18.5. Rounding out the MVP’s is Macalester College’s Alec Beatty who was named Offensive Skill MVP. Beatty led the conferences in touchdown receptions (18), receiving yards per game (121), and yards per catch (17.8).
Ripon College’s Cormac Madigan earned North Division Newcomer of the Year as he led the league in rushing touchdowns (13), rushing yards per game (110.9), and yards per carry (7.4). The South Division awarded co-Newcomer of the Year honors to Cornell College’s Kale Kuhiiki and Lake Forest College’s Anthony Rieck. Kuhiiki, a defensive lineman, made 41 tackles inlucding 28 solo and 7.5 for a loss along with two sacks while Rieck recorded 51 tackles, including 25 solo at defensive back.
St. Norbert’s Dan McCarty earned his second consecutive North Division Coach of the Year honor and third overall after leading the Green Knights to a MWC Championship and 9-1 overall record. In the South Division, Monmouth’s Chad Braun received his fourth straight Coach of the Year award as he led the Scots to a 5-0 divisional record and 8-2 overall.
Green Knights wide receiver Samuel Staehling earned back-to-back Elite 20 Awards or achieving the highest grade-point average among the student-athletes competing in the MWC Championship game.
