MADISON, Wisconsin — The Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament kicked off Saturday with the No. 1-3 Doubles position battle. The Pioneers of Grinnell College and the Foresters of Lake Forest College dominated all three draws and ended the day as either the champion or runner-up in all three positions.
No. 1 Doubles (Final Bracket/Results)
For the third year in a row, Lake Forest’s
Julie Lord and Leeza Bodnar took the top spot as No. 1 Doubles Champions. The duo battled hard against the No. 2 seed Abby Nielsen and Ali Hickey from Grinnell and came out on top 8-5 to take the title.
Only dropping three games before meeting Grinnell in the championship match, Lord and Bodnar took down Hannah Ryback and Tamera Holland from Ripon College in the quarterfinals and Cornell’s Abby Nelson and Emmaline Fievet in the semifinals.
On their way to the championship match, Nielsen and Hickey only dropped two games, one against Knox’s Bhumika Gupta and Himani Patel and the other against Lawrence’s Margot Connor and Emma Koppa.
No. 2 Double (Final Bracket/Results)
Grinnell freshman duo
Sabring Tang and Sophia de los Reyes cruised through the No. 2 doubles draw before meeting Lake Forest’s Tebatso Duba and Tyranny Miller in the finals.
They took on Beloit’s Hayden Lamphere and Emma Hahn in the quarterfinals, dropping them 8-0, before defeating Cornell’s Regina Bermudez-Smith and Megan Pope in the semifinals 8-1.
Foresters Duba and Miller took the quarterfinals match against Illinois College’s Kalisa Goertz and Ashley Brokaw 8-1 and went on to meet St. Norbert’s Hannah Keller and Emma Merrill in the semifinals, winning 8-3.
In the championship match, Tang and de los Reyes came out on top 8-5 in a tough match. Tyranny Miller entered the match as one-half of last year’s No. 2 Doubles defending champions.
No. 3 Doubles (Final Bracket/Results)
No. 2 seeded Grinnell College featured a duo of
Brenda Guan and Isabel Green who upset the No. 1 seeded Grace Gould and Katie Wegrecki from Lake Forest College.
Guan and Green took on Illinois College’s Lena Reed and Maggie Dooley in the quarterfinals, winning 8-1. In the semifinals, they went head-to-head with St. Norbert College’s Bethany Zoch and Nicole Pfotenhauer, toughing out a win at 8-5.
Gould and Wegrecki went through the quarterfinal against Beloit’s Makayla Zundel and Jaime Kelly and semifinal against Lawrence’s Amelia Watson and Lauren Aturaliya, only dropping two games.
Lake Forest would be in for a hard fight in the championship against Grinnell where they would fall 8-6, leaving Guan and Green as the champions.
