Pioneer Women's Tennis Win Five of Six Individual Tournament Singles Titles

MADISON, Wisconsin — The Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament finished up on Sunday with all six finals events between Grinnell College and Lake Forest College. The Pioneers would finish the day winning five of the six titles and a win by Lake Forest at the top spot would prevent the possibility of a sweep.

Defending champion at No. 1 Singles, Julie Lord started the tournament as the No. 2 seed eager to avenge her one and only Conference loss this season to Grinnell freshman Sabrina Tang. In a finals match that clocked over a two-hour timespan, Lord and Tang battled in out in a close match where Lord would take the win 7-5, 6-4.
 
Lord didn’t drop a game in her quarterfinal match against Ripon College’s Hannah Ryback. She would go on to defeat Lawrence University’s Margot Connor in the semifinals winning 6-1, 6-3.
 
Tang would make it to the finals match only dropping one game on her way. She defeated Illinois College’s Sophia Roth 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and St. Norbert College’s Lauren Paulson 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal.
 
No. 2 Singles (Final Bracket/Results)

No. 1 seed Abby Nielsen from Grinnell College defeated Lake Forest’s Tebatso Duba 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match to win the No. 2 Singles title.
 
Nielsen gave up one game on the day and it came in the second set of her finals match against the No. 2 seeded Duba. She defeated Monmouth’s McKenzie DeVilder in the quarterfinals and Cornell’s Emmaline Fievet in the semifinals.
 
On her way to the championship match, Tebatso Duba defeated Beloit College’s Priya Heinen 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and pulled out a tough one against St. Norbert College’s Hannah Swajanen 6-3, 7-5.

At No. 3 singles, Lake Forest’s Leeza Bodnar would come up short for the second year in a row. Grinnell sophomore, Ali Hickey defeated Bodnar 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match to take the title.
 
Hickey would defeat Beloit College’s Hayden Lamphere 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and St. Norbert College’s Nicole Pfotenhauer 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
 
Bodnar took on Illinois College’s Kalisa Goertz in the quarterfinals and Lawrence University’s Emma Koppa in the semifinals, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively.

No. 4 Singles (Final Bracket/Results)

Grinnell freshman Sophia de los Reyes took home the No. 4 Singles title after defeating Lake Forest College junior Tyranny Miller 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
 
Sophia de los Reyes took down Lawrence University’s Morgan Fisher 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal before defeating Cornell College’s Megan Pope 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal.
 
Tyranny Miller defeated Beloit College’s Emma Hahn 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and St. Norbert College’s Hannah Keller 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal
 
No. 5 Singles (Final Bracket/Results)

Grinnell College’s Isabel Green and Lake Forest College’s Natalia Leite put on quite a show in the No. 5 singles championship match. Isabel Green would come out on top with the title, but it wouldn’t be easy with Natalia putting up quite the fight as the match ended 7-5, 6-3.
 
Isabel Green faced Beloit College’s Makayla Zundel in the quarterfinals and Lawrence University’s Amelia Watson in the semifinals, winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
 
Natalia Leite defeated Illinois College’s Ashley Brokaw 6-1, 6-2 and St. Norbert College’s Bethany Zoch 6-2, 6-1 on her way to the championship match.
 
No. 6 Singles (Final Bracket/Results)

A showdown at No. 6 singles left Grinnell College’s Emma Gaydos with the title as she defeated Lake Forest College’s Katie Wegrecki 6-3, 6-4.
 
Gaydos routed quarterfinal and semifinal opponents 6-1, 6-0, taking down Beloit College’s Jaime Kelly and St. Norbert College’s Morgan Moxon.
 
In the driver’s seat as the No. 1 seed, Katie Wegrecki blanked opponents in the quarterfinal and semifinal on her way to the championship match. Wegrecki met Illinois College’s Maggie Dooley in the quarterfinals and Lawrence University’s Jacki Healy in the semifinals.
 
In addition to awarding medals to both champion and runner-up to the singles’ events, the Midwest Conference recognized Grinnell College as the regular season Women’s Tennis Champion, Grinnell Head Coach Paige Madara as the Coach of the Year, and Grinnell freshman Sabrina Tang as the Newcomer of the Year.
