MADISON, WI – Lake Forest College earned its first trip to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament in program history after winning the Midwest Conference (MWC) Tournament 5-0 over the league’s perennial favorite Grinnell College.
The Foresters are just the third different program to win the MWC Tournament with the other two being St. Norbert College and aforementioned Grinnell. Lake Forest concluded a dominant season that saw the Foresters go 9-0 in league play, win eight of nine titles at the individual tournament, and finally sweep the Pioneers to advance to the national tournament.
Lake Forest couldn’t have asked for a better start as they swept the doubles competition to grab an early 3-0 lead heading into singles play. However, it wasn’t an easy sweep as Grinnell made the Foresters work for that 3-0 advantage with all three matches going back-and-forth before Lake Forest pulled away late. The No. 2 doubles team of Allison Watts and Tyranny Miller finished first as they defeated Isabel Green and Brenda Guan 8-5 with No. 1 duo Julie Lord and Leeza Bodnar right behind with a matching score over Abby Nielsen and Judith Fan.
Emma Wang and Tebatso Duba close out the sweep with a third 8-5 victory over Lily Hamilton and Emma Gaydos. Needing just two more points to secure its first berth to the NCAA Tournament, the middle of Lake Forest’s lineup delivered as Duba and Bodnar got the win at the No. 3 and 4 spots respectively. Bodnar’s match earned the Foresters fourth point as she lost only one game in the first set 6-1, then cruised to a 6-0 victory in set two against Green. Duba followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Pioneers’ Gaydos to seal the shutout.
