Three Win Day Earns Cornell First MWC Baseball Championship

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Entering day two of the Midwest Conference (MWC) Baseball Tournament, Cornell College needed to win three games in one day if the team wanted to claim its first MWC Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Winning three games is exactly what the Rams did as they got revenge on University of Chicago with a 6-5 game one win before defeating Ripon College 21-13 and 8-2 in the championship games.
 
Cornell started the day with a rematch of the tournament’s opening game as it look to avenge its loss to UChicago. The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Caleb Wichman doubled then scored on Cale Jamesson’s single. However, the Maroons would score four over the  next three innings to take a 4-1 lead.
 
Cornell responded with its own three inning run of scoring and took the lead back for good with three run, two out rally in the sixth. Jamesson doubled in the first two runs before scoring the winning run on a Keenan Bryant single. Jamesson finished game one 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
 
The win meant one game down with two more to go for the Rams as the moved on to the championship needing to be undefeated Ripon twice. The championship opener was a high scoring affair with Cornell once again doing the most damage in the sixth inning. The Rams put up an 11 spot in the frame to take the lead for good as they held off the Red Hawks 21-13.
 
Jamesson had his second straight three hit game and drove in four runs while crossing the plate four times himself. Lucas Larson went 4-for-6 including delivering the deciding blow in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to left. He had a team-high five RBI and scored three runs.
 
After holding off Ripon’s attempt at a comeback, the two team’s got ready for championship game number two. This time the Rams didn’t wait until the sixth inning as they pulled out to an 8-0 lead after four. Cornell got another key three-run homer, this time off the bat of Zach Stone to make it a 4-0 game then Jamesson would had his second home run of the day to extend it to 7-0.
 
The only runs the Red Hawks managed to score off pitcher Caleb Wichman were lone runs in the fifth and ninth innings as Wichman scattered nine hits to earn the complete game victory. Stone finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored while Jamesson picked up two more hits to finished the day 8-for-12 with nine RBI and seven runs scored.
 
Cornell’s first ever MWC Baseball Championship also earns the team its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
