Cornell, St. Norbert Advance In Volleyball Tournament

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Cornell and St. Norbert both earned semifinal victories and will meet tomorrow afternoon in the 2013 Midwest Conference Volleyball Tournament.

In the first semifinal match St. Norbert bounced back after dropping the first set to Carroll and rolled to a 3-1 victory. Carroll won the first set 25-15 but then the Green Knights earned the next three set wins by the scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-16 to earn a spot in the title contest.

Heidi Spies headlined the Green Knights offense with 16 kills and had a hitting percentage of .234 in the contest. Breanne Brocker had nine kills and Anika Johnson had eight to round out the offense. Aubree Antosch led the game with 39 digs and Kaitlin Delahaut had 23 assists in the victory.

Carroll was led by Emily Cecka with 12 kills with Kelly Sloyan picking up 10. Jenna Shea had 20 digs with Taylor Kuehl assisting on 41 kills.

The second semifinal match saw Cornell sweep Ripon 3-0 and extend Cornell’s streak of shutout matches in league play to 10. The Rams took the first set 25-14, the second set 25-17, and then finished with a tight 26-24 win in the third set.

Kathleen O’Connor led all players with 16 kills and hit .250 in the contest for Cornell. Jessica Noble had nine kills and Taylor Dicus had eight kills in the victory. Kylea Weber led the Rams with 15 digs while Katherine Devlin had 22 assists.

Ripon was led by Allison Barnes with 10 kills with Karlye Wehner adding 10 digs. Abbi Williamson had 25 assists and 10 digs in the loss for the Red Hawks. 

Cornell hosts St. Norbert tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with the MWC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
