Midwest Conference Announces 2017-18 Academic All-Conference

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference (MWC) announced its Academic All-Conference honorees for the 2017-18 academic year which includes 1,454 student-athletes representing 10 institutions plus two affiliate schools in 20 sports. The criteria to become an Academic All-Conference selection includes a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.33 which is calculated only in the awarded academic year. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors who letter in any of the MWC’s fall, winter or spring sports are eligible for the award.

This year’s Academic All-Conference list features 258 multi-sport student-athletes. A total of 128 recipients were honored in two sports, while 129 received the honor in three.  One student-athlete was awarded in four sports as Lawrence University freshman Alex DuVall earned the honor in football, basketball, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Including the multi-sport winners, the MWC awarded 1,710 certificates.

For the second year in a row, Grinnell College placed a league high 241 student-athletes on the list and also produced 114 award winners in the fall, the most of any school in any season. St. Norbert College had the second most recipients with 184, including 41 multi-sport student-athletes, the most of any school. Rounding out the top-five, Knox College was third with 151 recipients, followed by Lake Forest College with 143 award winners and Illinois College with 137 winners.

The University of Chicago competing in their first year as a MWC affiliate member in football had 39 selections, the most in any sport. Football student-athletes produced the most Academic All-Conference honorees with 193 winners. Women’s indoor track and field came in second with 137 recipients, followed closely by women’s outdoor track and field (136) and women’s soccer (135). Men’s soccer edged out softball in selections 105 to 104 for the final spot in the top five.

For the 2017-18 academic year, 749 of the 1,454 Academic All-conference honorees were women and 704 were men. Finally, fall sports accounted for the most award winners with a total of 742 followed by winter (487) and spring (481).
