GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference (MWC) honored 1,470 student-athletes from nine member institutions and two affiliates as Academic All-Conference recipients for the 2021-22 academic year, announced Friday.
Representing the league’s eighteen sponsored sports, the MWC Academic All-Conference team features 761 award winners participating in men’s sports and 709 women’s sports participants. This year’s list also recognizes 256 multi-sport athletes, led by 158 women’s multi-sport recipients.
The criteria to be recognized as an Academic All-Conference selection includes having satisfied a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.33, which is calculated only in the awarded academic year. First years, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who letter in any of the MWC’s fall, winter or spring sports are eligible for the award. Additionally, the team for which the student-athlete competes must complete at a minimum 50% of its scheduled events.
Grinnell College finished with the highest number of student-athletes earning recognition with 260. Illinois College followed with a second-place finish (173), ahead of Ripon College in third (159). With the most honorees in a single sport, the University of Chicago picked up 57 football awardees as a league affiliate.
Of the 740 student-athletes recognized for fall awards, football led the way with 217. The winter saw 546 honorees with women’s indoor track & field taking the top spot with 135 award winners. A total of 535 awards were presented to spring sport student-athletes led by baseball with 169.
MWC Academic All-Conference honorees are announced annually after the conclusion of the posting of spring term grades.
