GRINNELL, Iowa – For the ninth time in school history, the Grinnell College men’s athletic teams have claimed the All-Sports Award, its first since the 2014-15 academic year.
The Pioneers won the Ralph Shively Cup for the 2023-24 academic year with 58 points and picked up Conference titles in cross country, swimming & diving, and tennis. Grinnell finished second in basketball, third in outdoor track & field, fourth in soccer and indoor track & field, and seventh in football and baseball.
In second place, Illinois College totaled 55.5 points behind team championships in football, soccer, and basketball. The Blueboys were runners-up in outdoor track & field, and finished fifth in cross country, swimming & diving, indoor track & field, tennis, and eighth in baseball.
Ripon College ranked third overall with 48 points. The Red Hawks won titles in indoor and outdoor track & field, while finishing third in cross country, fourth in basketball, fifth in football and baseball, sixth in tennis, seventh in swimming & diving, and eighth in soccer.
Cornell College tallied 47 points in fourth place, followed by Monmouth College (43.5 points), Lake Forest College (36 points), Lawrence University (35 points), Beloit College (32 points), and Knox College (20 points).
All-Sports points are awarded on a 9-8-7, etc. basis in all sports except for football, which is done on a 10-9-8, etc. basis, and tennis, which is done by 7-6-5, etc.
The All-Sports trophies are named for Ralph Shively, former Chair of the mathematics department at Lake Forest College, who was actively involved in the MWC as a Faculty Athletic Representative beginning in 1974 before becoming the Conference Commissioner in 1982 and held the Commissioner post until 2004.
