2010-11 Football Defensive Player of the Week

September 7
Colin Steiner - Linebacker - Carroll University
Senior - Friendship, Wis.

Steiner led a smothering defense that helped the Carroll University football team to a 35-21 non-conference road win over Lakeland College. The victory marks th first time the Pioneers have posted a non-conference road win since knocking off North Park University in 1998. The linebacker registered nine tackles. Four tackels were for loss of yardage, including two quarterback sacks. Steiner also had one pass break up.

September 13
Robbie Ulloa - Safety - Lawrence University
Junior- Burlington, Wis.
Ulloa scored his first career touchdown and led the Lawrence defense in the Vikings’ 33-12 victory over Knox. Ulloa had a game-high eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Ulloa also had two fumble recoveries and forced a fumble. Ulloa scored his first career touchdown early in the game when he scooped up a fumble by the Knox quarterback and raced 66 yards for the score. He later forced a fumble by the Knox quarterback deep in Lawrence territory and recovered that fumble to stop another Prairie Fire drive.

September 20
Kyle Bonin - Lineman - Carroll University
Senior- Manitowoc, Wis.

Senior defensive lineman Kyle Bonin helped the Carroll University defense hold Beloit College to a mere 60 yards rushing in the Pioneers’ 33-21 Midwest Conference win over Beloit College. The win improves the Pioneers to 3-0 on the season, the second time three seasons CU has opened the campaign with three victories (2008). Carroll and Ripon College sit atop the MWC at 2-0, with a first place battle set for next Saturday. Bonin recorded two tackles for loss of yardage, one sack and four pressures on the Buccaneer quarterback.

September 27
Adam Hoste - Defensive Back - Monmouth College
Junior- Colona, Ill.

For the second week in a row, Monmouth’s Adam Hoste intercepted a pass and ran it back 29 yards for a touchdown as the Scots downed Illinois College 33-9. Hoste’s pick tied the game at 6-6 in the game’s first four minutes after the Blueboys had taken the lead on a blocked punt. The junior was around the ball most of the day, leading Monmouth with 12 tackles, including a sack and a tackle-for-loss. For the season, he leads the team in interceptions and is second tackles and scoring.

October 4
Ben Nantell - Defensive Back - St. Norbert College
Junior- Stevens Point, Wis.

Nantell led St. Norbert in a 48-2 win over Monmouth with a team-high nine tackles, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one interception. Nantell is St. Norbert’s leading tackler on the season with 47, nearly double the next closest player on the squad.

October 11
Kevin Beck - Linebacker - Knox College
Senior- Chicago, Ill.

Beck tied a school record with three interceptions to help lead Knox College to its first win of the season Saturday at home against Grinnell College. Along with his three interceptions Beck made six tackles and had one pass break up. The Prairie Fire picked off six passes, which also ties a school record dating back to 1973 against Illinois College, in the 31-21 Midwest Conference victory against the Pioneers.

October 18
Marquis Bradley - Linebacker - Grinnell College
Senior- Wichita, Kan.
Bradley had a dominating performance in the Pioneers’ 31-17 come-from-behind win over Lawrence University Saturday, coming up with a game-high 13 tackles to go along with an interception and fumble recovery. He now has 75 tackles on the season. In Saturday’s victory, the Pioneers overcame a 17-0 deficit with 31 unanswered points while improving to 5-2 on the season for their best start since 1998.

October 25
Ed Dobernig - Defensive Back - Lake Forest College
Freshman- New Berlin, Wis.
Dobernig intercepted a pair of fourth quarter passes to help secure the Foresters’ 35-14 victory over visiting Lawrence on Saturday. The first came at the Lake Forest 19-yardline with the home team nursing a 21-14 advantage. He returned his second pick of the game 39 yards for a touchdown with 1:22 to play to seal the win. He also recorded five tackles, including four solos, in the contest.

November 1
Luke Galle - Linebacker - Lawrence University
Freshman- Madison, Wis.
Galle recorded a pair of interceptions, the first time a Lawrence linebacker had picked off two passes in a game since Eric Karnosky did it against Ripon on Nov. 4, 1989. Galle’s first interception came in the third quarter. With Lawrence nursing a 15-3 lead, Galle picked off Beloit quarterback Brian Maughn at the Lawrence 20-yard line to snuff out a Bucs drive. Late in the fourth quarter with Lawrence up 29-6, Galle then picked off Maughn at the Lawrence 31 to stop another drive. Galle, who finished with three tackles, also recovered a pair of on-sides kicks, including one with 52 seconds left to seal the win.

November 8
Dan Sjoquist - Defensive Back - St. Norbert College
Junior- Kingsford, Mich.
Sjoquist led St. Norbert defensively in a 28-0 win over Lake Forest to lock up the outright MWC championship. Sjoquist finished with seven tackles, including two for losses totaling 31 yards. He also had one interception to halt a Lake Forest drive in the red zone, broke up a pass and blocked a punt - his third of the year.
