Anthony Beaird, Monmouth
Beaird, a junior guard from Coal Valley, Ill.(Moline), came out firing this season, averaging 25.0 points per game in Monmouth’s first four contests. Beaird, who has two 30-point games, has done a lot of his scoring beyond the arc and at the free throw line. He’s made 19 three-pointers, including games of nine and seven, and he’s made 19-of-23 free throws, including a 12-of-13 performance on Saturday in a Fighting Scot win. Beaird’s other numbers include 16 assists, 12 rebounds and three steals.
December 7
Tommy Becker, Ripon
Becker, a senior from Delavan, Wis. (Delavan-Darin HS), had a 29-point performance against No. 4 ranked Lawrence on Saturday. Becker hit 11 of 21 shots from the field, including all 4 3-pointers, to help Ripon earn the overtime victory. He also scored six of Ripon’s 11 points in overtime.
December 14
Bo Johnson, Ripon
Johnson, a sophomore from Wausau, Wis., averaged 25 points and 7.5 rebounds in two big Ripon College road wins over Beloit College and Augustana College. Against league-foe Beloit the sophomore guard scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. On the road at Augustana, Johnson tallied 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting and added nine rebounds for the Red Hawks who are are now 6-1 on the season.
January 11
Jared Kelly, Knox
Kelly, a senior from Woodhull, Ill. (Alwood), averaged 34.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and two assists last week to help Knox to victories over Grinnell and Monmouth. He broke two school records for points (50) and total field goals (21) in the Prairie Fire’s victory over Grinnell. He hit 21 of 24 shots against against the Pioneers and eight of 17 shots against Monmouth.
January 18
Josh Hinz, Beloit
Hinz, a junior from Ft. Atkinson, Wis. (Ft. Atkinson HS), scored a total of 74 points in Beloit’s victories last week over Grinnell and Monmouth. He set a Flood Arena record for points and field goals and tied the arena mark for rebounding in Beloit’s victory over Grinnell. He scored 42 points, hitting 18 of 25 shots from the field, and pulled down 20 rebounds. Hinz
came back the next day to score 32 points in the Bucs’ victory over Monmouth. He hit 12 of 17 field goals and grabbed nine rebounds. For the week, he averaged 37 points and 14.5 rebounds a game.
January 25
Jason Holinbeck, Lawrence
Holinbeck, a senior guard from Neenah, Wis. (Neenah), helped Lawrence to key victories over Grinnell, Lake Forest and Carroll. For the week, he averaged 28 points per game. He shot 75 percent from the floor, including 69 percent from long
range. Holinbeck’s best outing was a school record 47 points in the Vikings’ victory over Grinnell.
February 1
Chris Braier, Lawrence
Braier, a junior forward, led Lawrence to victories this past weekend against Monmouth and Grinnell. He had 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and five steals in the Vikings’ win against the Fighting Scots and followed that up with 36 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and five steals in Lawrence’s victory over Grinnell. Braier also became the 17th player
in Lawrence basketball history to surpass the 1,000 point mark in their careers.
February 8
Dodd Browning, Lake Forest
Browning, a junior from Champaign, Ill. (Central), helped lead Lake Forest to a pair of MWC victories this past weekend. He scored a game-high 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a victory over Carroll. He followed that up by scoring 11 points and dishing out three assists in the Foresters’ one-point thriller over St. Norbert.
February 15
Pete Jennings, Illinois C.
Jennings, a 6-5 sophomore from Madison, Iowa, averaged 36 points and nine rebounds for the week. Jennings had 49 points against Grinnell, posting the second-highest point total all season in the MWC. He also had 23 points and 10 rebounds against Monmouth.
February 22
Tommy Becker, Ripon
Becker, a senior from Delavan, Wis. (Delavan-Darien), averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, five assists and three steals
per game this past week to help the Red Hawks pick up key MWC victories over St. Norbert College and Beloit College. Becker, who became the 24th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points this past week, had a 24-point,
eight-rebound, five-assist night against St. Norbert. Becker reached the scoring milestone in only three seasons.
