2012 Special Teams Performers of the Week

September 4, 2012
Mike Schroeder - Running Back - Knox College
Senior - Glenview, Ill.

Schroeder set two school records with nine kick returns for 225 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown run, in the Prairie Fire’s season-opening 62-55 loss at home against Eureka College. Schroeder finished the game with a total of 232 all-purpose yards.

Matt Newman - Kicker - Illinois College
Sophomore - Ridgefield, Wash.

Newman was a perfect 7-for-7 on point after touchdown attempts Saturday in Illinois College’s 53-20 win at Grinnell College. Newman is a perfect 13-for-13 on PAT attempts in 2012.

Matt Traub - Punter - Carroll University
Junior - Wilmette, Ill.

Despite averaging just 29.5 yards over four punts, Traub played a major role in helping the Carroll University football team improve to 3-0 for just the 16th time in the program’s 118-year history following a 48-6 victory over Knox College. Traub successfully pinned the Prairie Fire inside their own 10 yard line on two occasions, which ultimately gave Carroll’s offense great field position.

Graham Fisher - Kicker/Punter - Grinnell College
Freshman - Palo Alto, Calif.

Fisher booted a 50-yard field goal, just 5 yards shy of the school record, as the Pioneers collected their first victory of the season with a 13-7 decision at Beloit College. His field goal came in the first period and helped the Pioneers snap a six-game losing streak dating back to last season. He also punted four times for a 39.0-yard average.

Randy Hill - Kicker - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Green Bay, Wis.

Hill provided the decisive points in St. Norbert’s 20-16 win over Cornell this Saturday. Hill made both of his field-goal attempts, connecting on tries of 41 and 34 yards. He also averaged 58 yards on six kickoffs with one touchback to give Cornell an average starting field position of its own 31-yard line.

Preston Ritchie - Running Back - Cornell College
Sophomore - Punta Gorda, Fla.

Ritchie returned a second-quarter kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown in Cornell’s 42-38 home win over Knox. It was Cornell’s first kickoff return for a TD since 2008. Ritchie finished with 122 yards on five kickoff returns. He also rushed nine times for 45 yards and had two catches for 19 yards.

Matt Newman - Kicker - Illinois College
Sophomore - Ridgefield, Wash.

Newman was a perfect 7-for-7 on his PAT attempts on Saturday as Illinois College scored a 49-29 win at Knox College. Newman remained perfect on PAT attempts this year with his 41st consecutive successful conversion. Newman, who is also 3-for-4 on field goal attempts this season, currently leads Illinois College with 50 points scored.

Sophomore - Ridgefield, Wash.

Newman kicked a pair of field goals and was a perfect 4-for-4 on PAT attempts in Illinois College’s 34-31 win at Monmouth College on Saturday. Newman was successful on field goal attempts from 35 and 27 yards, while running his successful PAT streak to 45 in the Blueboys’ first win over the Fighting Scots since 1996.

Sophomore - Ridgefield, Wash.

Newman remained perfect on PAT attempts in Illinois College’s 50-28 win over Cornell College on Saturday, going a perfect 6-for-6 in the Blueboys’ win. Newman is 51-for-51 on PAT attempts this season and is currently tied for seventh place in Midwest Conference history in made extra points in a season, with one regular-season game remaining.

Randy Hill - Kicker - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Green Bay, Wis.

Hill was a huge factor in St. Norbert winning the field position battle in the Green Knights’ 20-10 win over Lake Forest. Hill drilled five kickoffs for an average of 63.8 yards, with three going for touchbacks. He also made 2 of 3 field-goal attempts (made 37 and 33, missed 43) and both of his extra points. Lake Forest’s starting field position was its own 26-yard line, while the Green Knights averaged starting at their own 49.
