2012 Men's Soccer Defensive Performers of the Week

September 4, 2012
Noah Davis - Goalkeeper - St. Norbert College
Senior - South Milwaukee, Wis.

Davis posted two shutouts - both 1-0 wins over Lakeland and Edgewood - to give the Green Knights a 2-0 start and match last season’s win total. Davis made four saves against Lakeland and five against Edgewood.

Kyle Mason - Midfielder - Illinois College
Junior - Latham, Ill.

Mason provided two key assists over the weekend as Illinois College earned a 1-1 overtime draw with Buena Vista University on Saturday, before a 2-1 win over Blackburn College on Sunday. Mason provided the assist on a free kick on Illinois College’s draw with Buena Vista, as well as the assist on a corner kick that resulted in Illinois College’s first goal against Blackburn. Mason was also a key piece in holding the two opponents to only a pair of goals.

Matt Schmidt - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Junior - Groveland, Ill.

Schmidt came up big for the Fighting Scots on the road in Wisconsin. Saturday, he made three saves as Monmouth won 2-1, recording its first win over St. Norbert since the 2001 season. Sunday, Schmidt added nine more saves, including several of the spectacular variety, as the Scots recorded their first shutout of the season in a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Ripon.

Ethan Guenther - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College
Senior - LaGrange, Ill.

Guenther recorded a pair of saves while blanking host Lawrence University 1-0 on Saturday. It was his fourth consecutive shutouts and he has yet to allow a goal in 412 minutes and 45 seconds this season.

Ryan Stransky - Defender - Monmouth College
Senior - Oswego, Ill.

Since a mid-season position switch, senior center back Ryan Stransky has helped anchor the Fighting Scots’ defense, and he played a pair of solid games as Monmouth posted shutout wins against Illinois College and Cornell to improve to 3-1-1 in league play. In the two games last week, the Scots allowed just seven corner kicks and held opponents to putting just 56 percent of the shots on goal while keeping them scoreless.

Ethan Guenther - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College
Senior - LaGrange, Ill.

Guenther turned in his sixth and seventh scoreless starts of the season last week as Lake Forest blanked Concordia University Chicago 4-0 on Monday and host St. Norbert College Friday night. Guenther made a pair of saves in 59-and-a-half minutes on Monday and one in his fifth official shutout of the season on Friday.

Brett Grijalva - Midfielder - Lake Forest College
Freshman - Irvine, Calif.

Grijalva and the rest of the Lake Forest defense blanked Carroll University 1-0 on Wednesday and Knox College 3-0 on Saturday to take over first place in the MWC standings. Grijalva also headed in a corner kick against Knox for his first career goal.

Charlie Brey - Defense - Lake Forest College
Junior - Kalamazoo, Mich.

Brey helped lead Lake Forest to a pair of victories over the weekend as the Foresters clinched the 2012 league title. He and the rest of the defense limited host Monmouth College to just five shots in a 4-1 decision on Saturday and Illinois College was held to just seven attempts in Lake Forest’s 2-0 triumph on Sunday.

Isaiah Tyree - Goalkeeper - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Rachos De Taos, N.M.

Tyree made 10 saves and allowed just two goals in 180 minutes as the Pioneers prevailed in two “must-win” situations to advance to the Midwest Conference Tournament. He had five saves in a 5-1 victory over Monmouth College and added five more as the Pioneers rallied with two goals in the final 6 minutes to beat Ripon College 2-1 and move on the postseason tourney. For the season, Tyree has a 1.28 goals against average and .786 saves percentage.
