2012 Women's Soccer Defensive Performers of the Week

September 4, 2012
Emily Schultz - Defender - Ripon College
Junior - Oshkosh, Wis.

Schultz played all 180 minutes in Ripon’s two games over the weekend as the center defender, helping Ripon earn their best start (2-0) to a season in six years. The Red Hawks shut out Bethany Lutheran 2-0 on Saturday, before defeating Lakeland 6-2 on Sunday, which saw Schultz record one goal and two assists.

Cat Solberg - Goalkeeper - Illinois College
Freshman - Elgin, Ill.

Solberg allowed just two goals in three matches over the past week, while posting a shutout in a 4-0 win over visiting Blackburn College on Sunday. Solberg has allowed just three goals in five matches this season, while registering a pair of shutouts.

Cassie Burke - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Senior - Golden Valley, Minn.

Burke had 160 shutout minutes as Lawrence went 2-0 on the week. Burke recorded 10 saves in a 3-0 victory over Illinois College. She also picked up an assist on Keli Muchowski’s goal in the 15th minute. Burke also played the first 70 minutes, made one save and didn’t allow a goal in Lawrence’s 4-1 victory over Knox. For the week, Burke was 2-0 with a 0.00 goals against average and 1.000 save percentage.

Willow Macy - Goalkeeper - Beloit College
Freshman - Almond, Wis.

Macy went 2-0-1 last week in net for the Bucs with a 0.62 goals-against-average, making 18 saves. She got her first collegiate shutout in a 0-0 overtime tie with Wisconsin Lutheran College, making 12 saves. For the season she is 3-1-1 with a 1.72 gaa in seven games, six of them starts.

Rachael Koene - Goalkeeper - Knox College
Junior - Golden Valley, Minn.

Koene matched her career-high with 15 saves in a 1-0 Midwest Conference loss on Saturday at Grinnell College. The Pioneers took 16 shots on goal and Koene stopped all but one that got through at the 68:21 mark of the match. Koene had posted back-to-back shutouts in goal in the Prairie Fire’s last two matches, both wins.She also had 15 saves during the 2010 season at Illinois College and in 2011 at Carroll University.

Dani Gordon - Midfielder - Monmouth College
Junior - Freeport, Ill.

Defensive center midfielder Dani Gordon was instrumental in Monmouth’s 6-0 victory over Lawrence, which marked the Fighting Scots’ first shutout of the Vikings in 15 years. Gordon continually won balls out of the air and tackles in the midfield, keeping Lawrence from controlling the ball and fueling Monmouth’s attack. She was credited with two assists in the game, and she also pushed forward to score two goals.

Becky Esrock - Sweeper - Lake Forest College
Junior - St. Louis, Mo.

Esrock anchored a Lake Forest defense that allowed just eight shots in a 5-0 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Thursday and one attempt in a 4-0 blanking of Knox College on Saturday. Esrock also netted a pair of goals of her own on Thursday.

Emily Flint - Defense - Monmouth College
Freshman - Decatur, Ill.

Freshman marking back Emily Flint helped Monmouth to a 3-0 week in the Midwest Conference. The Fighting Scots surrendered just one goal in those 270 minutes, and Flint was on the field for all but 15 minutes of it. She also pushed forward to deliver a key goal against league-leading Lake Forest, putting Monmouth ahead 1-0 in a game the Scots went on to win 3-1 handing the Foresters their first league loss.

Cassie Burke - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Senior - Golden Valley, Minn.

Cassie Burke posted a shutout in one match and was outstanding in her other outing of the week for the Vikings. Burke made eight saves in a 3-0 win over Beloit this past Saturday to post her second shutout of the season. She also made 10 saves, including several of the spectacular variety, in Lawrence’s 1-0 loss to St. Norbert on Sunday. For the two matches, Burke had a .947 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average.
