2013-14 Men's Basketball Performers of the Week

November 18, 2013
Jack Taylor - Guard - Grinnell College
Junior - Black River Falls, Wis.

Taylor, who made international headlines last November with an NCAA-record 138-point game, got off to a hot start this season. On Sunday, he erupted for 109 points in a 173-123 victory over Crossroads. That total is the third-highest in NCAA history, trailing only his effort last year and a 113-point game by Rio Grande’s Clarence “Bevo” Francis in 1954. Taylor was 35-of-70 from the field, including a 24-of-48 performance from 3-point land. He also hit 15-of-17 free throws as the Pioneers improved to 2-0. His biggest stretch came in the early part of the second half, scoring 53 points in the first nine minutes. In a 144-99 victory over Finlandia University Friday, Taylor poured in 71 points with the aid of 11 3-pointers.

Patrick Maher - Guard - Grinnell College
Senior - Park Ridge, Ill.

Maher played a big role in the Pioneers remaining unbeaten on the season. In Grinnell’s MWC opener, a 132-126 victory at Illinois College, Maher had 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and a 9-of-10 performance from the free throw line. He also had four assists and a steal. Earlier in the week, Maher had 15 points, three assists and two steals in an 88-79 non-conference win over Wartburg College.

Steve McAfee, Jr. - Guard - Beloit College
Sophomore - Chicago, Ill.

In two MWC games last week (0-2) McAfee averaged 27.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg while shooting 69.7% (23-33) from the field. He also had 5 assists. In a loss to Grinnell on Saturday he exploded for 48 points on 20-28 shooting from the field. He also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. The 48 points are the 4th most in Beloit history while the 20 made field goals are the second-most ever.

Brandon Gries - Guard - St. Norbert College
Senior - Kiel, Wis.

Gries fueled St. Norbert to the top of the Midwest Conference standings with two wins last week. Gries scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in last Wednesday’s 71-56 win over Lake Forest. He also had three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Gries then scored a career-high 30 points in Saturday’s 121-115 overtime win at Grinnell, with eight of his points coming in the decisive overtime period. Gries finished with six assists, five rebounds, two steals and no turnovers in 37 minutes. Gries leads St. Norbert in scoring at 20.2 points per game.

Patrick Maher - Guard - Grinnell College
Senior - Park Ridge, Ill.

Maher turned in a double-double as the Pioneers pushed their record to 7-1 with a 156-150 non-conference win over Simpson College Saturday. He dished out 17 assists, third-most in a game in Pioneer history, and tallied 21 points in the victory. He also had a game-high four steals and grabbed four rebounds. Maher now ranks fourth in program history for career assists with 368. Maher leads the MWC in assists with 7.4 a game and ranks in the top 10 in scoring (17.6 points per game), field goal percentage (60.3 percent), steals (2.0 per game), 3-point percentage (44.8 percent) and assist-turnover ratio (3.3).

James Lazarcik - Forward - Beloit College
Senior - La Crescent, Minn.

In two games, both wins, Lazarcik averaged 25.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg while shooting 84.6% from the field (22-26, blocking three shots and handing out four assists. He had 31 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Knox on 12/19 and 20 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime win at La Verne CA on 12/29. For the season he averages 18.1 ppg and 8.2 rpg while shooting 69.5% from the field with 10 blocked shots. In the win at La Verne he became the 20th member of the BC 1,000-Point Club. He also grabbed his 600th career rebound against Knox.

Kam Cerroni - Guard - St. Norbert College
Senior - Menomonee Falls, Wis.

Cerroni had a banner week to lift St. Norbert, ranked No. 14 in D3hoops.com Top 25, to a 9-1 overall mark. In Saturday’s 81-68 win over Lawrence, Cerroni finished with 23 points with four rebounds and canned seven 3-pointers, one off the St. Norbert record. In Monday’s 70-63 win over Viterbo in the championship game of the St. Norbert Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament, Cerroni finished with 13 points and was 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Cerroni was named to the All-Tournament Team. For the week, Cerroni scored 36 points, was 9-for-18 from the floor, 9-for-15 from beyond the three-point arc and was 9-for-9 at the free-throw line.

Patrick Maher - Guard - Grinnell College
Senior - Park Ridge, Ill.

Maher made national headlines when he shattered the NCAA record, regardless of level, for assists in a game when he dished out 37 against College of Faith (Ark.) last Monday. That broke the previous NCAA mark of 34 established in 2007 by former Pioneer and current Grinnell associate head coach David N. Arseneault ’09. Maher finished the game with a double-double as he scored 19 points. For the week, he averaged 15.3 points and 17.3 assists per game.

January 20, 2014
Alec Molter - Center - Carroll University
Senior - Milwaukee, Wis.

Molter converted 16-of-21 field goal attempts last week to help the Carroll University men’s basketball team to Midwest Conference victories over Beloit College (67-54) and Knox College (68-47). Molter, a senior from Milwaukee, Wis. (Greenfield), scored 22 points and grabbed five in the win over Beloit then contributed 15 points and 18 rebounds in the victory over Knox.

Brandon Berry - Guard - Illinois College
Senior - Olney, Ill.

Berry helped the Blueboys to a pair of Midwest Conference wins by averaging 30.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game over a two-game stretch. Berry netted 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 95-78 win at Grinnell College on Wednesday, before scoring 34 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 79-62 win over Lake Forest College on Saturday. Berry shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from the field, 55.5 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range and 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line over the two games.

Taylor helped the Pioneers to a pair of crucial MWC road wins over the past week. In a 121-115 victory at Monmouth College, he poured in 27 points with the aid of 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 11-of-15 performance from the free throw line. He also had two assists. Taylor followed that up with a 22-point performance in which he drained 12-of-13 free throws. He also recorded a game-high three steals. The nation’s leading scorer is averaging 31.8 points per outing.

Taylor averaged 34.5 points during the week and became the 23rd player to score 1,000 points wearing a Pioneer uniform as Grinnell extended its winning streak to five games. The nation’s leading scorer, who averages 32.1 points per outing, had a game-high 40 points with the help of nine 3-pointers in a win over Knox. He followed that up with a game-high 29 points, which was aided by an 8-of-15 performance from 3-point range, and four assists in a win over Beloit College.

Ryan DePouw - Forward - Lawrence University
Junior - Oconto, Wis.

DePouw had a big week as Lawrence kept alive its MWC Tournament hopes with a pair of victories. DePouw averaged 24 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 65.2 percent (15-23) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (4-7) from 3-point range, and 93.3 percent (14-15) from the foul line. DePouw scored a career-high 27 points in Lawrence’s 77-68 win over Cornell on Saturday and posted a double-double with 12 rebounds. DePouw scored 21 points, grabbed four rebounds, handed out five assists and picked up three steals in Lawrence’s 97-83 win at Beloit this past Wednesday.

Patrick Maher - Guard - Grinnell College
Senior - Park Ridge, Ill.

Maher played a huge role for the Pioneers as they wrapped up second place in the MWC while qualifying for the league tournament for the fourth year in a row. He averaged 21 points and dished out 17 assists in wins over Cornell College and Lawrence University. After scoring 16 points and tallying seven assists against Cornell, Maher finished off the regular season in a big way by nearly compiling a triple-double against Lawrence. In that Senior Day contest, he had game-highs of 26 points and 10 assists to go along with eight rebounds.
