2013 Men's Tennis Performers of the Week

February 5, 2013
Jack Michael - Carroll University
Sophomore - Brookfield, Wis.

Jack Michael led the Carroll University men’s tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Carthage College in the 2013 season-opener. The Redmen entered the match ranked No. 20 in the region. Michael won both of his matches on Saturday night. He combined with Ryne Fertitta for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles then won in three-sets at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7). Michael’s opponent was regionally ranked and was an All-American a year ago.

Garrett Russikoff - Cornell College
Senior - Stevenson Ranch, Calif.

Russikoff went 4-0 and notched his 99th career victory Saturday as the Rams beat Illinois College, 9-0, and Webster, 6-3, in Jacksonville, Ill. He recorded a pair of straight-set wins at No. 2 singles. Russikoff partnered with Tyler Shonkwiler for identical 8-2 wins at No. 1 doubles.

Walter Palmer - Knox College
Sophomore - Wilmette, Ill.

Palmer was perfect on the court and helped Knox down Simpson College and North Central College on February 16. Palmer won his #3 singles match against Simpson 6-1, 6-3 and teamed up with Karl Ruzgas in #1 doubles for an 8-1 victory over the Storm’s top doubles team. The Prairie Fire won the match against Simpson 6-3. Palmer defeated his #3 singles opponent from North Central 6-3, 6-2 and with Ruzgas prevailed against the Cardinals in #1 doubles 8-2. Knox held off North Central 5-4 for a doubleheader sweep. Palmer improved to 5-2 in singles play while he and Ruzgas own a 6-1 mark at #1 doubles.

Jason Dunn - Lawrence University
Senior - Fond du Lac, Wis.

Dunn knocked off a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents in nonconference play last week. Playing at No. 2 singles, Dunn beat Florent Marco of UW-Eau Claire 6-1, 6-3 and downed Vic Mirasola of UW-La Crosse 6-4, 6-2. Dunn also teamed with Max Zlevor at No. 1 doubles and posted a 9-8 (7-4) victory over UW-Eau Claire, which was part of Lawrence’s 5-4 victory over the Blugolds.

David Johnson - Monmouth College
Junior - St. Charles, Ill.

Johnson went 4-0 last weekend while facing Midwest Conference opponents Carroll and Ripon. Johnson opened play with doubles partner David Stewart and posted an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. He moved up from his usual No. 2 singles position to play at No.1 last weekend and posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over his Carroll counterpart. His results were similar against Ripon, winning doubles 8-4 and posting a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win at singles. Johnson is riding a five-match doubles win streak.

Emilio Gomez - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Las Vegas, N.M.

Gomez dropped just one game in three matches while helping Grinnell to a pair of easy victories Saturday. In a 7-2 victory over Augustana College, Gomez swept his opponent at No. 2 singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score and teamed with Elliott Czarnecki ’15 to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. He moved up to No. 1 singles in a 9-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University and again posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Gomez is now 8-5 in singles and a combined 13-4 in doubles for the Pioneers, who are ranked 14th in the Central Region and own a 14-4 record.

John Adams - Lake Forest College
Senior - Colorado Springs, Colo.

Adams posted a combined 7-1 record at the top of the singles and doubles lineups as the Foresters won all four of their matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He and freshman Mike Riley were perfect at #1 doubles against Heidelberg University, College of Wooster, Edgewood College, and Gettysburg College. Adams was also 3-1 at #1 singles with victories against Heidelberg, Wooster, and Gettysburg.

Garrett Russikoff - Cornell College
Senior - Stevenson Ranch, Calif.

Russikoff became Cornell’s all-time wins leader Saturday with his 110th career victory. He finished 3-1 on the day, moving his career mark to 112-83. Russikoff stands 18-9 on the season, which includes an 11-3 mark at No. 1 & 2 singles. The Rams (10-2) earned a 6-3 win over Morningside, and then fell 5-4 to Wartburg.

Jack Michael - Carroll University
Sophomore - Brookfield, Wis.

Michael, ranked No. 25 in the lastest ITA rankings, finished 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles (w/ Ryne Fertitta) last week in Hilton Head, S.C. He led the Pioneers to victories over Concordia (WI) University (9-0) and SUNY Oneonta (6-3). Their only blemish on the spring break trip was against Colby College (6-3).

David Ham - Knox College
Senior - Lakewood, Wa.

Ham won both of his singles matches in convincing fashion to help the Prairie Fire post a pair of team victories last week. Ham defeated his #2 singles opponent from Eureka College 6-0, 6-0 last Friday at Eureka. He followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win in #4 singles against Illinois College on Saturday at Monmouth College. Ham has won three straight singles matches and 10 overall this season. Knox defeated both Eureka and IC 9-0.

Craig Sherwood - Lawrence University
Sophomore - Kenosha, Wis.

Sherwood had a perfect week, including a key singles victory in Lawrence’s win over Carroll last Saturday. Sherwood also went 2-0 in doubles. In Lawrence’s 5-4 victory over Carroll, Sherwood defeated Isaac Jordan 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 to help clinch the win over the Pioneers. He also teamed with Brian DeCorte for an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. Sherwood and DeCorte also posted an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles in Lawrence’s 9-0 win over Dominican (Ill.) the following day.

David Stewart - Monmouth College
Junior - Peoria Heights, Ill.

Stewart enjoyed a perfect 6-0 weekend as Monmouth College earned their third straight berth in the Midwest Conference Team championships. The junior teamed with David Johnson at No. 1 doubles to post an 8-5 win over Knox Saturday morning and an 8-6 win over Grinnell that afternoon. In Sunday’s meeting with Cornell, the tandem rolled to an 8-1 win. In No. 3 singles, Stewart won in straight sets over his opponents from Knox and Cornell. His most impressive win came against Grinnell when he was moved up to the No. 2 spot. Stewart responded by grinding out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win.
