2013 Football Defensive Performer of the Week


September 9, 2013
Jeremy Demlow - Linebacker - Cornell College
Senior - Oceanside, Calif.

Demlow matched his career high with 14 tackles in Cornell’s season-opening 45-14 home win over Lawrence. The senior linebacker collected eight solo stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and also forced a fumble. Demlow led a defense that created four turnovers and held Lawrence to 3.7 yards per play.

Kurt Frischman - Defensive Line - Illinois College
Senior - Arnold, Mo.

Frischman set the Illinois College single-game record for sacks in a game with 3 1/2, and tackles for loss in a game with 5 1/2, in the Blueboys’ 42-13 win over Grinnell College on Saturday. Frischman led IC with eight tackles. He also tallied a pair of quarterback hurries. He broke the previous IC single-game records of three sacks in a game (a record he held with two others) and five TFLs in a game. Frischman’s big game helped Illinois College improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference.

Brian Flanagan - Defensive End - Beloit College
Senior - Midlothian, Ill.

In the Bucs’ 38-21 win over Lawrence on Saturday Flanagan led a strong defensive effort with 11 tackles, eight solo, and 4.5 sacks for 25 yards in loss. The 4.5 sacks are the third-most in a game in Beloit history. In three games this season he has 21 tackles, 13 solo, with the 4.5 sacks.

Pat Clark - Safety - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Naperville, Ill.

Clark picked off a pair of second-half passes to help preserve Lake Forest’s 14-7 victory at Knox on Saturday. He returned his first interception of the day 12 yards to the Prairie Fire 3-yardline, setting up a touchdown that gave the visitors a 14-0 lead late in the third quarter. He also intercepted a pass at the Lake Forest 36 with just 1:14 on the fourth quarter clock to secure the Forester win. Clark was in on four tackles in the game, including one behind the line of scrimmage, and recorded an additional pass breakup.

Andy Paider - Linebacker - Lawrence University
Senior - Denmark, Wis.

Paider recorded a career-high 7.0 tackles for loss on his way to a season-best 14 tackles in Lawrence’s game against Illinois College. Paider picked up 2.0 sacks as part of his 7.0 TFLs against the Blueboys. The 7.0 TFLs is the highest total in the conference this season and gives Paider 12.0 TFLs on the season. Paider now has 30.0 TFLs for his career and is now tied for fifth on Lawrence’s career list. Paider was part of the Lawrence defense that allowed only 20 points to the Blueboys (IC scored a defensive touchdown in the game), who were held 19 points below their league-best average.

Matt Petersilka - Linebacker - St. Norbert College
Junior - Sturgeon Bay, Wis.

Petersilka led St. Norbert’s defense in a hard-fought 20-17 win over Cornell Saturday. Petersilka had a team-high 11 tackles, all of which were solo stops. He also had two tackles-for-loss and one quarterback sack. St. Norbert allowed Cornell just three second-half points, allowing the Green Knights to rally from a 14-0 deficit.

Geoffrey Miller - Linebacker - Cornell College
Senior - Honolulu, Hawaii

Miller led a strong defensive effort with 14 tackles (nine solo) in Saturday’s 45-14 win at Knox. He also recorded 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Cornell’s defense came away with six turnovers and pitched a second-half shutout. The Rams allowed just 87 total yards in the second half.

Ed Dobernig - Corner Back - Lake Forest College
Senior - New Berlin, Wis.

Dobernig accounted for two of the Lake Forest defense’s five turnovers in a 17-10 victory at Cornell on Saturday. The first was an interception and 32-yard return to end the Rams’ first drive of the contest. The Foresters scored on a 21-yard pass on the next play to take a 7-0 lead. Dobernig scored the visitors’ second touchdown himself after picking up a fumble and returning it 33 yards to the end zone. He finished the game with six tackles, including five solos, and three pass breakups in addition to his interception.

David Ternes - Linebacker - Grinnell College
Junior - Oakley, Calif.

Ternes, the MWC leader in tackles, had a game-high 16 tackles in the Pioneers’ victory over Lawrence University. But more importantly, he had a pair of tackles on fourth down when the hosts had driven to the 1- and 2-yard line to stop drives. Ternes, an All-Region and All-MWC selection last season, leads the league with 108 tackles.

Jack Porter - Defensive End - Monmouth College
Junior - St. Charles, Ill.

Porter gave the Monmouth offense a boost in the Scots 49-21 win over Ripon last Saturday. Porter recovered a second quarter fumble and ran it back 18 yards for Monmouth’s first score of the day. It was one of three fumble recoveries Porter recorded on the day. He finished with team highs with 10 tackles (nine) solos and three fumble recoveries.

Pat Clark - Safety - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Naperville, Ill.

Clark returned an interception for a touchdown in Lake Forest’s 31-3 victory over St. Norbert at home. He stepped in from of a pass at the visitors’ 27-yardline and weaved through the Green Knight defense to the end zone, making the score 14-3 in the second quarter. Clark also had five tackles in the contest, helping the Foresters hold their opponent to just 181 total yards.
