2013 Football Special Teams Performer of the Week


September 9, 2013
Jon Gurchak - Kicker/Punter - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Grayslake, Ill.

Gurchak was perfect as a place-kicker and helped Lake Forest consistently win the field position battle in the team’s 45-3 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday. Five of his eight kickoffs landed in the end zone and he averaged 35.2 yards on five punts, including two that ended up inside the 20-yardline. The average starting field position for Cougar drives following punts and kickoffs was inside the 24-yardline. In addition, Gurchak made all six of his extra points as well as a career-long 47-yard field goal.

Matt Newman - Kicker - Illinois College
Junior - Ridgefield, Wash.

Newman was perfect on point-after-touchdown kicks once again, going 6-for-6 on PAT attempts in Illinois College’s 42-13 win over Grinnell College on Saturday. His second successful PAT on Saturday came on a drop kick. Newman has converted 66 consecutive successful PATs, dating back to the start of the 2012 season. His effort helped Illinois College improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference.

Sophomore - Grayslake, Ill.

Gurchak was 2-for-3 on field goals and averaged 34.5 yards on eight punts in Lake Forest’s 15-7 victory over Grinnell College on Saturday. He accounted for the game’s final six points on a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 27-yarder in the fourth. His only miss was a school record-tying 50-yard attempt that caromed off the crossbar and back into the field of play.

Adam Hickson - Defensive Line - Illinois College
Junior - Kampsville, Ill.

Hickson blocked a pair of point-after-touchdown kicks in Illinois College’s 44-28 win at Ripon College on Saturday. The junior defensive lineman blocked the PAT after Ripon’s score at the end of the first half, and then another late in the third quarter when Ripon could have made it a one-possession game with a successful kick. Hickson also made a pair of tackles in the win. His efforts helped the Blueboys improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Midwest Conference play.

Bryce Jones - Linebacker - Lake Forest College
Junior - Kampsville, Ill.

Jones’ block of an extra point attempt proved crucial in Lake Forest’s 14-13 victory over visiting Carroll on Saturday. After the Pioneers had taken a 13-7 early in the fourth quarter, Jones broke through the middle of the line and blocked the extra point attempt. A Forester touchdown and extra point later in the period gave the home team the victory.

C.J. Shields - Receiver - Monmouth College
Junior - Amboy, Ill.

A wide receiver by trade, Shields made a big impact on special teams during last Saturday’s 65-3 win over Grinnell. Shields did it all, blocking a Pioneer punt in the first quarter to set up Monmouth’s first score. He also added a pair of tackles and returned a punt 15 yards. Just for good measure, Shields also caught three passes for 35 yards and a TD on offense.

Kaleb Whiting - Kicker - Cornell College
Junior - Amboy, Ill.

Whiting connected on 6-of-6 PAT kicks and added a 37-yard field goal in Cornell’s 45-14 road win over Knox. He third-quarter field goal started a string of 24 unanswered points for Cornell in the second half. On the year, Whiting is 24-of-26 on PATs and 5-of-9 on field goals, all of his makes from beyond 30 yards.

Jon Gurchak - Kicker/Punter - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Grayslake, Ill.

Gurchak’s kicking and punting played a significant role in Lake Forest’s 17-10 triumph at Cornell on Saturday. As a kicker he made a 25-yard field goal and both of his extra points in the contest. In addition, three of his four kickoffs were touchbacks. Gurchak also averaged 38.0 yards on a team record-tying 12 punts in the game. Cornell had just 24 punt return yards on the day, giving Gurchak a 36.0 net punting average.

Joey Kropp - Defensive Back - Lake Forest College
Junior - Arlington Heights, Ill.

Kropp scored his first career touchdown on Saturday at Ripon College when he returned a punt 41 yards to give Lake Forest the early lead. He also covered 50 yards on his only kickoff return of the game. Kropp added 18 more yards on a pair of punt returns to finish the day with 109 return yards.

Jeffery Bollnow - Safety - Cornell College
Senior - Tucson, Ariz.

Bollnow delivered the play of the game on special teams in Cornell’s 35-29 overtime upset of 22nd-ranked Illinois College in Mount Vernon. Bollnow blocked a 21-yard field goal attempt on the first possession of overtime, and Myron Seabrook returned the loose ball 90 yards for the winning touchdown. Bollnow also contributed five tackles and recovered a fumble as Cornell (6-3 overall) clinched its first winning season since 2001.

Sean Kivlin - Kicker - Carroll University
Junior - Lake Geneva, Wis.

Kivlin kicked 11 points for Carroll University in the Pioneers 23-21 victory over Illinois College. Kivilin= connected on three field goals (21, 26, 29) and two extra points in Carroll’s two-point victory over Illinois Col.
