2013 Men's Soccer Defensive Performers of the Week


September 3, 2013
Andrew Matheney - Defender - Illinois College
Junior - Kansas City, Mo.

Matheney scored a game-tying goal just moments before Drew Comstock netted the game-winner in a dramatic comeback victory for the Blueboys against Buena Vista University on Sunday in Storm Lake, Iowa. After the Blueboys surrendered a go-ahead goal to Buena Vista with less than five minutes to play, Matheney leveled the score in the 88th minute. Comstock scored the game-winner 41 seconds later to give the Blueboys a 3-2 win. Illinois College improved to 2-0 with the win over Buena Vista.

Jordan Setser - Goalkeeper - Cornell College
Senior - Davenport, Iowa
Setser recorded a complete-game shutout with six saves in Saturday’s 5-0 home win over MacMurray. The senior goalkeeper helped the Rams snap a 32-match winless skid dating back to Sept. 18, 2011.

Jojo Comstock - Goalkeeper - Illinois College
Sophomore - Jacksonville, Ill.
Comstock posted Illinois College’s first shutout of the season in Sunday’s 1-0 overtime win over Concordia University Chicago. In his first action of the season, Comstock made six saves without allowing a goal in just under 95 minutes in net. His stellar play helped the Blueboys improve to 3-2-1.

Sean Dockrell - Goalkeeper - Knox College
Sophomore - Dublin, Ireland

Dockrell posted three consecutive shutouts in wins at home last week against MacMurray College, Ripon College, and Lawrence University. The Prairie Fire outscored their opponents 13-0. Dockrell is the first goalie since the 1988 Knox men’s soccer Midwest Conference championship team to record three straight shutouts. He has seven on the season, matching the seven by the Knox 1988 team, and is tied for the fourth-most in a season in Midwest Conference history.

Ian Taylor - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College
Junior - Cleveland, Ohio

Taylor’s 4-0 blanking of visiting St. Norbert College on Saturday was his third shutout and fourth scoreless start of the season. He has not allowed a goal in nearly 300 minutes, a streak that spans four games. Taylor made a pair of saves in the game and is now 4-2-0 with a 0.63 goals against average on the year.

Matt Schmidt - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Senior - Groveland, Ill.

Schmidt turned in one of his best outings of the year as Monmouth scored their first conference win this season, a 2-0 blanking of Cornell. The senior goalkeeper turned aside all five shots he faced to help the Scots to the win. For the week, Schmidt turned in eight saves in two games as Monmouth posted a 1-1-0 Midwest Conference record.

Ethan Guenther - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College
Senior - LaGrange, Ill.

Guenther was perfect in goal as Lake Forest recorded a pair of 1-0 victories last week. He made five saves at Carroll Wednesday night in a battle of undefeated teams in league play. He then stopped all four shots on goal he faced in a triumph at UW-Whitewater, the sixth-ranked team in the North Region, on Saturday. Guenther is now 3-2-0 with a 0.87 goals against average and .871 save percentage this season.

Kyle Kraus - Sweeper - Lake Forest College
Junior - LaGrange, Ky.

Kraus anchored a Lake Forest defense that kept a pair of opponents off the scoreboard over the weekend and he assisted on the game-winning goal on Sunday. Monmouth managed just five shots, including only one on goal, in a 3-0 decision on Saturday. The Foresters defeated Illinois College 2-0 on Sunday and the Blueboys tallied just six shots with two needing to be saved by the goalie. Kraus also worked his way into the box before assisting on Sunday’s first goal.

Matt Schmidt - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Senior - Groveland, Ill.

Schmidt moved to No. 2 in the all-time wins list at Monmouth College after blanking MWC Tournament qualifier Knox 2-0 in the Scots’ season finale. The senior keeper turned aside six shots, including a spectacular diving save on a blast from point-blank range. The win was Schmidt’s fourth shutout this season and also moved him to No. 2 on the Scots’ all-time list.
