2013 Women's Soccer Defensive Performers of the Week

Sidney Blodgett - Goalkeeper - Ripon College
Sophomore - Eau Claire, Wis.
In two games last week, Blodgett made 12 saves, while allowing two goals for a save percentage of .857. In a 4-0 win over Lakeland, Blodgett saved two shots, while playing all 90 minutes, en route to her first shutout of the season.

Sarah Platzer - Goalkeeper - St. Norbert College
Junior - Whitefish Bay, Wis.
Platzer helped St. Norbert to a big win on Saturday, making 10 saves in a 2-1 win over UW-Stevens Point. It was the Green Knights’ first win over the Pointers since 1990, snapping a 15-game losing streak in the series. Platzer also played the first half in St. Norbert’s 7-0 win over Lakeland last Wednesday.

Samantha Barranco - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Senior - Lincolnshire, Ill.
Barranco came up big in Monmouth’s 1-0 victory over Culver-Stockton, the Fighting Scots’ lone game of the week. In posting her third consecutive shutout, Barranco made eight saves, including a spectacular two-save sequence late in the game. The win avenged a 3-1 loss to the Wildcats the year before. Barranco raised her save percentage to an even .900 for the season.

Ellen Radcliffe - Defender - Illinois College
Junior - Eagle Point, Ore.
Radcliffe scored a pair of goals and anchored a defense that allowed just one goal in three matches over the past week. Radcliffe scored in the 13th minute of an 8-0 win over Robert Morris University Springfield on Tuesday, and added another goal in the Lady Blues’ 2-0 win over visiting Lawrence University on Saturday. Radcliffe and the Lady Blues are off to a 4-4-1 start to the season.

Sidney Blodgett - Goalkeeper - Ripon College
Sophomore - Eau Claire, Wis.
Blodgett played all 180 minutes in goal for the Red Hawks last week, leading Ripon to a 2-0 record. In those two contests, Blodgett recorded 13 saves. Against Illinois College, she helped Ripon win 1-0, recording her third shutout of the season and helping the Red Hawks improve their conference record to 2-1.

Denise Nelson - Sweeper - Monmouth College
Senior - Chicago, Ill.
Nelson starred once again for the Scots in back-to-back shutout victories over Illinois College and Cornell. Nelson played every minute of both conference games for the Scots and has not been subbed out of a game in her entire 3+-year career. The co-captain’s timely tackles and clears limited Illinois College to just five shots for the entire game, and limited Cornell to just two first-half shots, during which time Monmouth accumulated a 3-0 lead. The two MWC wins lifted Monmouth to a 5-0 league record.

Elle Silverman - Defender - Grinnell College
Junior - Falls Church, Va.
Silverman played a key role on the defensive side as the Pioneers posted two shutouts over the weekend. They handed Monmouth College their first MWC loss with a 1-0 victory and then blanked Coe College 2-0. Grinnell now has eight shutouts on the season.

In Ripon’s only game of the week, Blodgett recorded her fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over conference-leading Grinnell. She recorded eight saves, while playing all 90 minutes between the posts.

In two games last week, Blodgett played all 180 minutes, while allowing just one goal and making 18 saves. That included a 2-0 victory over Cardinal Stritch, marking Blodgett’s sixth shutout of the season, which ranks second in the MWC.

In two games last week, Blodgett allowed just two goals in 180 minutes of action, while making 27 saves, as she helped Ripon split the pair of games. Needing a win to stay in contention for the MWC Tournament, Blodgett tied a school record with her seventh shutout of the season in Thursday’s 1-0 win over MWC Champion St. Norbert. In that game, she set a career-high with 16 saves.
