2014 Baseball Performers of the Week

Matt Godinsky - Outfield - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Sycamore, Ill.

Godinsky had a big performance at the plate as the Pioneers took 2-of-3 games from Central College over the weekend. He hit .600, collecting six hits including three doubles and a homer. Godinsky also had three RBIs and three runs scored.

Will Pahos - Grinnell College
Senior - Clarendon Hills, Ill.

Pahos, an All-MWC pitcher last season, had a dominating performance as the Pioneers defeated Central College on Saturday. He fanned five batters in six innings while giving up just one earned run.

Alex Lawrence - First Base - Beloit College
Junior - Waukesha, Wis.

Lawrence hit .464 with a team-leading 13 hits and 11 RBIs on the Bucs’ Spring Trip to thye Central Florida Invite. He also scored seven runs, had two doubles, two stolen bases, and fielded 1.000 on 54 chances during the eight games.He had at least two hits in six of the eight games.

Nick Visconti - Illinois College
Senior - Godfrey, Ill.

Visconti helped the Blueboys secure a doubleheader sweep of DII Oakland City on Saturday as he picked up the win in the nightcap. Visconti pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits, two walks and three runs (only one earned), against four strikeouts. The win was Visconti’s second this season for the Blueboys, who improved to 7-4 with the sweep.

Anthony Mack - Shortstop - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Libertyville, Ill.

Mack’s bat lit up opposing pitchers during the team’s spring break trip to Florida. He hit .552 in eight games, going 16-of-29 at the plate with two homers, two doubles and a triple. He pounded out 14 RBI and scored six runs while compiling a slugging percentage of .897.

Jeremy Ryan - Cornell College
Senior - Chicago, Ill.

Ryan fired six innings of three-hit ball in Sunday’s 4-2 Game 2 victory over Northwestern (Minn.). The Cornell senior gave up just one unearned run and did not issue a walk to improve his season record to 2-0. Ryan has yet to surrender an earned run in 13 innings pitched this season for the Rams (6-4), who won all three games in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, over the weekend.

Erik Smoy - Outfield - Knox College
Senior - Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Smoy helped lead Knox to doubleheader sweeps at home against Robert Morris University - Springfield and Beloit College on March 29 and 30. He was 11-for-19 at the plate (.579) in the four games with one home run and 14 RBIs while scoring six runs and stealing six bases in six attempts. Smoy had a pair of four hit games, including a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with six runs driven in and three stolen bases in a 19-2 win against Robert Morris University of Springfield on March 29. He capped off the weekend with six hits in 11 at bats, a home run, five RBIs, three runs scored, and three stolen bases in a doubleheader sweep of Beloit College on Sunday. Smoy is now hitting .358 with 23 RBIs and seven stolen bases this season.

Brett Nohr - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Green Bay, Wis.

Nohr improved to 2-1 this season with a complete-game win in a 6-1 win Sunday over Grinnell. Nohr allowed just three hits in the win, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning and a shutout into the eighth inning. Nohr walked just one and struck out five and faced just 32 batters - five over the minimum.

Nick Dalfonso - Outfield - Illinois College
Junior - Washington, Ill.

Dalfonso batted .526 (10-for-19) over a five-game stretch to help the Blueboys to a 3-2 record, including a 2-2 showing in Midwest Conference South Division play. Among his hits were a double and a three-run home run. He scored seven runs, drove in eight more, walked four times and stole seven bases. Dalfonso leads all MWC players with 21 stolen bases this season. His big week helped the Blueboys improve to 13-8 overall and 2-2 in MWC South Division play.

Ryan Kaveney - Beloit College
Sophomore - Cary, Ill.

In an MWC-opening win over Lawrence, Kaveney pitched a complete game four-hitter, striking out 13 and giving up no walks in the 5-0 win on Saturday in Beloit. Only one Lawrence base-runner got past second base in the game. For the season Kaveney is 3-1 with a 1.20 ERA in 30.0 innings. He has struck out 32 and walked five with two complete games.

Nick Visconti - First Base - Illinois College
Senior - Godfrey, Ill.

Visconti played a key role in helping the Blueboys win three games of a four-game set with Knox College over the weekend. Visconti batted .615 (8-for-13) in three games as a position player, which included a 5-for-6 day with four runs, five RBIs and a home run in the Blueboys’ 23-8 win in Saturday’s opener. The five hits tied an Illinois College single-game record. Visconti tallied six runs, six RBIs, two home runs and a double over the three-game stretch. Visconti’s .412 batting average is tops among Illinois College regulars this season.

Visconti turned in Illinois College’s best pitching performance of the season on Saturday, with a two-hit shutout of Knox College in an 8-0 win. Visconti walked only one batter, while striking out 12. Visconti improved to a staff-best 4-0 with the win. Visconti’s effort helped the Blueboys improved to 16-10 overall and 5-3 in Midwest Conference South Division play.

Michael Polcyn - Infield - Ripon College
Junior - Ripon, Wis.

Polcyn helped lead Ripon to three conference wins in their four games last week. He batted .611 (11-18) in those games with one double, three home runs and 10 RBI. That raises Polcyn’s season average to .500 (38-76) with a slugging percentage of 1.000.

Sam Tinkham - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Newington, Conn.

Tinkham tied a Grinnell College baseball program record by striking out 16 batters in a 9-2 victory over Illinois College in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. His total matched the previous mark established in 1977 by Tom Richmond and again by Jake Chavez in 1999. Tinkham allowed just seven hits and issued two walks while improving to 3-1.

John Tesensky - Outfield - Cornell College
Freshman - Watertown, Wis.

Tesensky was key to a 4-1 week that saw the Rams (20-10 overall, 8-4 MWC) secure their first winning season since 2003, snap a 16-game series losing streak against rival Coe and take three of four games from South Division foe Illinois College. The freshman outfielder hit .529 (9-of-17) with nine RBIs and a .588 slugging percentage. He raised his season batting average to .358.

Marshall Zahn - Ripon College
Junior - De Pere, Wis.

In two starts last week, Zahn pitched 15 innings without allowing an earned run, improving his season record to 4-1 and lowering his season ERA to 2.12. He struck out 17 batters, while walking just three in the two games combined. In Sunday’s 9-1 win over Lawrence, Zahn allowed zero earned runs on four hits in eight innings, while recording a school record 15 strikeouts, which is also tied for fifth in Midwest Conference history.

Matt Hammond - Catcher - Grinnell College
Freshman - Post Falls, Idaho

Hammond was an offensive force as the Pioneers won five of six games in a five-day span to clinch the MWC South Division title. He hit a sizzling .706, coming up with 12 hits in 17 at bats. He had a homer, two doubles and knocked in 13 runs while compiling a slugging percentage of 1.000. Hammond also had a perfect fielding percentage. The division title is Grinnell’s fourth in the last five seasons.

Sam Tinkham - Grinnell College
Sophomore - Newington, Conn.

Tinkham continued his impressive campaign by compiling a spotless 0.00 ERA in nine innings during a pair of Pioneer victories during the week. Tinkham pitched an inning of relief in the Pioneers’ 18-4 victory over Knox College on Wednesday, and then shut down Cornell College in a 10-1 victory Saturday by scattering five hits and fanning 12 in eight innings of work. The win pushed him to 5-1 on the season. Grinnell won five of six games in a five-day span to secure its fourth MWC South Division title in the last five seasons.
