MONMOUTH, Ill. – Needing two touchdown passes to break the NCAA all-divisions record for career TD passes, Monmouth’s Alex Tanney got them early Saturday in a 69-14 win over Carroll.
Tanney connected with fellow senior Mike Blodgett for two quick scores in the first quarter to eclipse the previous record of 148 career TD passes shared by Division III’s Justin Peery of Westminster and Division II’s Jimmy Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg. The first – a 64-yarder – came on the first play of the Scots third possession. The next capped a seven-play, 49-yard drive.
The 2009 Melberger award winner and Gagliardi finalist added one more TD for the day, hitting Trey Yocum in the second quarter for a seven yard score. Tanney’s total of 150 scoring strikes came in 44 games and he has one regular season game left to play.
Monmouth’s senior signal-caller also moved into second place in career passing yards by a Division III quarterback. Tanney completed 14 of 22 passes for 265 yards to pull within 324 yards of the career mark set by Josh Vogelbach of Guilford. He’ll need to do a little better than his 322 yard-per-game average next weekend in order to claim that record.
