MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell took home four singles championships during the second day of the 2011 Midwest Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament in Madison, Wis. The Pioneers took home titles in the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 flights while Lake Forest and Monmouth each picked up an individual champion in the No. 2 and No. 4 flight, respectively.
Juan Carlos Perez (No. 1) won his fourth singles title in as many tries with a straight sets win (6-2, 6-3) win over Ryan Kreis of Lake Forest. Perez started his day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Carroll’s Kevin Rasmussen and cruised past Lawrence’s Ryan Dunn 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal round before winning gold, again.
Lake Forest’s John Adams won his second straight title, the first in the No. 2 flight, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Johnson (Monmouth) in the championship match. Adams beat the first round winner Sam Ewig (Ripon) 6-1, 6-3 before beating Dmitriy Glumov of Grinnell 6-4, 6-2. He then bested David Johnson (Monmouth) 6-1, 6-2.
David Stewart was the only other non-Grinnell individual winner of the day when he ran off three straight wins for his first individual title in the No. 4 flight as a freshman over Jon Flaksman 6-4, 7-5 in the tightest championship matches of the day. Stewart also beat Jeremy Andereck (Lawrence, 6-1, 6-1) and Colin Johnson (Grinnell, 0-6, 6-1, 7-6) en route to the title.
Matrin Dluhos, Ishan Bhadkamkar and Daniel Nellis also picked up individual championships for Grinnell on the day. Dluhos defeated Elliot Muth (Lake Forest, 6-1, 6-3) in the No. 3 flight for Grinnell, Bhadkamkar defeated Sam Graf (Monmouth, 6-4, 7-5) in the No. 5 flight and Nellis topped Anthony Warren (Lake Forest, 6-4, 6-1) in the No. 6 flight to round out the winners.
The 2011 MWC Men’s Tennis Tournament will conclude tomorrow when three doubles champions will be crowned at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. The first matches will begin at 8:30 a.m.
