MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell added to its men’s tennis championship record with a 5-0 victory over Lawrence in the team portion of the 2013 Midwest Conference Men’s Tennis Championships. The team championship is Grinnell’s tenth straight and 16th overall.
Grinnell took a 3-0 lead after doubles play in the championship match and never looked back. The No. 1 doubles flight of Elliott Czarnecki and Emilio Gomez earned an 8-2 decision over Jason Dunn and Max Zlevor to open up play and were followed with an 8-5 win by Ben Charney and Aaron Lapkin in the No. 3 flight over Craig Sherwood and Brian DeCorte. Colin Johnson and Tracy Johnson wrapped up singles play with a hard fought 8-6 match against Copper Smith and Jeremy Andereck.
After the sweep in doubles the Pioneers only needed victories in the No. 4 and 6 flights to complete their championship run. C.J. Ray defeated Craig Sherwood 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 flight while Charlie Wilhelm finished the job in the No. 6 flight with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jeremy Andereck.
Grinnell earned a spot in the championship game by defeating Carroll earlier in the day while Lawrence downed Monmouth. The Pioneers won by a 5-1 margin with Lawrence downing Monmouth 5-3. Grinnell ends the regular season with a 22-11 record while Lawrence finished with a 14-7 mark. With the championship Grinnell earns the Midwest Conference automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament which begins next month.
The championship weekend continues through the weekend as the singles champions will be crowned on Saturday and the doubles champions will be decided on Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
