Grinnell and Monmouth Win Doubles Championships

MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell claimed a pair of doubles championships and Monmouth won in the other at the 2014 Midwest Conference Men’s Tennis Championships in Madison, Wis. on Sunday. The Pioneers took home gold in the No. 2 and 3 flights while Monmouth earned the win in the No. 1 flight.

The doubles championship winners were as follows:

No. 1 – David Johnson/David Stewart (Monmouth) def. Elliott Czarnecki/Tommy Pitcher (Grinnell) 5-7, 6-3, 6-2
No. 2 – Tracy Johnson/Emilio Gomez (Grinnell) def. Chris Franco/Derek Rineberg (Monmouth), 6-2, 7-5
No. 3 – C.J. Ray/Cole Miller (Grinnell) def. Josh Sweere/Casey Brice (St. Norbert) 6-1, 6-4

Grinnell was recognized for its sportsmanship all season, and in the championships, receiving the team Sportsmanship Award for the 2014 season. Grinnell Head Coach Andy Hamilton was honored as Midwest Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year. The member coaches at this weekend’s championships voted on both awards.

With the team championship being decided on Friday Grinnell moves on to represent the Midwest Conference in the 2014 NCAA Regional Tournament with opponents and dates to be determined.
