GRINNELL, Iowa – Cornell College junior Walker Breard and St. Norbert College freshman Carson Jacques have been honored as the Midwest Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Weekly Notes
Breard had another incredible series against Illinois College, going 9-for-17 at the plate with eight runs, three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI in four games. The junior slugger topped 100 RBIs for his career (108) and tied Cornell's all-time home run record with 25, 11 which have come against the Blueboys. For the week, Breard hit .458 (11-for-24) and slugged 1.083 with seven extra-base hits, eight runs and 13 RBI.
Jacques turned in an unplanned quality long-relief effort for St. Norbert in its 11-10 win over Ripon College on Saturday. Jacques entered the game in the first inning and allowed the Green Knights to rally from an 8-0 deficit to steal the win. Jacques worked 6 2/3 innings while scattering seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He allowed two runs and left the game after the seventh inning with the game tied 10-10.
Notable Performances
The Rams’ Andy Dodson improved to 2-0 in MWC action, firing eight effective innings in Cornell's 9-3 road win over Illinois College. The senior right-hander allowed two earned runs and struck out three. For the season, Dodson is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA.
Griffin Jack led St. Norbert to a 3-1 weekend in a crucial MWC North series against Ripon. Jack hit .563 (9-for-16) with seven runs scored, two doubles, one home run and four RBI. He also walked four times (.650 OBP) and stole three bases. He is hitting .571 (20-for-35) in MWC play and is hitting a team-high .423 on the season.
In the four-game series with Lawrence University over the weekend Kam Sallee led Beloit College to a 3-0-1 record and hit .556 (10-for-18) with five runs scored, four doubles, one home run, eight RBI, a 1.553 OPS and had 30 chances at first with no errors. For the season, he is hitting .407 (33-for-81) with 10 runs scored, eight doubles, a home run, 18 RBI, a 1.033 OPS, while playing errorless ball at first.
Nic Stevens helped Monmouth College to a conference-opening split last weekend in four games with Grinnell College. The senior picked up two hits and three RBI on Saturday as the Scots took an 8-6 win over Grinnell after dropping the opener in extra innings. His first inning double was the key hit in a four-run inning. Stevens kept the hot bat going Sunday with a five-hit twinbill driving in two runs and scoring two in a 10-4 game one win. For the week, Stevens hit .421 with five RBI and a .521 slugging percentage. Jason DeCicco pitched the Fighting Scots to their first league win this season, an 8-6 road win over Grinnell. The freshman fanned five and walked just two while scattering six hits over 6-1/3 innings. DeCicco was unhittable early, retiring the first seven batters he faced and 11 of the first 13.
