GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference (MWC) announced its Performers of the Week for baseball and softball today.
Nominees are submitted by institutional directors of sport communications based upon student-athlete performances during the week of March 3 – March 9 and then voted on by the league’s committee of sports information directors to determine the ultimate honorees.
The Performer of the Week award winners are as follows:
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Ben Schweit, Beloit College
Ben Schweit pitched an absolute gem in the Bucs 2-1 loss to UW-Superior on Sunday. Schweit struck out a career-high 13 batters and gave up just 3 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Ben leads the MWC in strikeouts with 23 total Ks.
Baseball Position Player of the Week
Hayden Derlein, Knox College
First-year Hayden Derlein led Knox to a doubleheader sweep at Eureka on Sunday, going 4-for-6 with a slash line of .667/.750/.833, reaching base in six of his eight plate appearances. He had a season-high three hits in the second game, an 8-3 victory, scoring twice. Derlein has hit safely in each of the Prairie Fire’s first four games, batting an even .400, to help Knox get off to its first 4-0 start since 1999.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Georgia Sedlack, Lawrence University
Georgia Sedlack earned her first collegiate victory at Eureka this past weekend. Sedlack went the distance in Lawrence’s 11-3 win over Eureka, allowing five hits while striking out eight and walking two, to get her first win. She also worked a scoreless seventh in the second game of the doubleheader. For the week, she allowed six hits over six innings, struck out 10 and walked two for a 3.50 ERA.
Softball Position Player of the Week
Peyton Souhrada, Cornell College
Souhrada capped a big opening day with a walk-off grand slam in Cornell’s 11-7 Game 2 win over Blackburn that saw the Rams rally for eight runs in their final at-bat. The junior went 3-fo-5 with two homers, a double, three runs and six RBIs in the doubleheader sweep. She posted a 2.000 slugging percentage.
