GREENSBORO, North Carolina —
Kevin Fitzgerald '25 became the first Grinnell College swimmer in a dozen years to earn first-team All-America honors Thursday at the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships.
Fitzgerald did so with an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley at the Greensboro Aquatic Center with a time of 3 minutes, 56.02 seconds. That is the highest finish for a GC swimmer at nationals since Michael Brus won the 200 backstroke in 2013.
Fitzgerald's effort comes after earning second-team All-America honors in the 200 IM on Wednesday.
In Thursday's prelims, Fitzgerald broke his own school and MWC record in the 400 IM with a clocking of 3:53.02. That time, which was fifth-best in the prelims, eclipsed his previous mark of 3:54.44 set earlier this season.
In the 200 freestyle relay prelims earlier Thursday, Grinnell got a two-for-one deal in terms of records. The quartet of
Rommin Adl '26,
Aidan Donovan '28, Fitzgerald and
Evan Feilmeyer '28 broke the school and MWC record with a time of 1:21.75. That broke the previous marks of 1:21.80 set earlier this season by Grinnell.
In the same race, Adl set a new school record in the 50 freestyle with his leadoff leg of 20.58. The previous record was 20.71 by Donovan earlier this season.
Grinnell's busiest day of the meet will be Friday with the 200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay and Feilmeyer in the 200 butterfly.
