PLATTEVILLE, Wisconsin – Playing in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2001, Grinnell College fell to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 125-97, in Friday night’s opening round.
Platteville scored the first points of the game and quickly built a 14-5 lead with just under five minutes off the clock. Ten minutes in, Grinnell trailed 33-15 and entered halftime facing a 37-point deficit, 71-34.
Platteville extended its lead to 45 points early in the second half, reaching that margin at the 17:31 mark, before Grinnell narrowed the gap slightly. The Pioneers ultimately fell by 28 points.
Platteville shot an impressive 67.7% from the field, while Grinnell connected on just 38.8% of its attempts.
Grinnell concludes its season with a 20-8 overall record (11-5 MWC). The Pioneers secured an NCAA postseason berth by winning the MWC Tournament title and claiming the league’s automatic qualifier.
Platteville improves to 26-2 and advances to face Wisconsin Lutheran (25-3) at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday.
