ST. LOUIS, Missouri – The Grinnell College women’s tennis program advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season with a 4-0 victory over Wheaton (Ill.) on Thursday afternoon at the Tao Tennis Center.
The Pioneers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead over the Thunder after doubles, cruising to a 6-1 victory on court one (Paige Sargent/Isabel Voinescu) and a 6-2 victory on court two (Tan Mukherjee/Eliana Martin).
Winning all six first sets in singles, Grinnell earned straight-set wins on courts three, four and five thanks to Marta Gonzalez, Nichole Henning and Voinescu, respectively. Gonzalez won 6-1, 6-0, Henning was victorious 6-3, 6-1 and Voinescu handled her opponent 6-0, 6-2.
Grinnell (17-6) advances to take on #13 Kenyon College in the second round on Friday (May 8). First serve in St. Louis is set for 12 p.m.
