RIPON, Wis. – 2011 MWC Tournament Champion Carroll had a conference-leading six athletes on the 2011 Midwest Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference team that was announced Thursday afternoon. Monmouth midfielder Logan Simpson was the Player of the Year while Lake Forest forward Mahir Mameledzija was honored as the Offensive Player of the Year and Carroll defender Adam Bruk was the Defensive Player of the Year. George Perry was named Coach of the Year after guiding Monmouth to an 8-6-2 mark during the regular season.
Simpson led the league with 37 points this season for the Fighting Scots and also was tops in the league with 14 goals. Simpon tallied three multi goal games this season, two of which included hat tricks, in a season where he posted a shooting percentage just shy of 24% and four game winning goals.
Mameledzija earned the Offensive Player of the Year honor after a sophomore campaign where he finished second in the league in both points (32) and goals (13) while averaging 4.53 shots per game, which was tops in the MWC. Mameledzija had three multi goal performances and tallied four game winning goals in the process.
Bruk is the third straight Pioneer to win the Defensive Player of the Year award after leading a defensive unit that gave up an average of 1.15 goals per game and posted a team goals against average of 1.14, both second in the MWC. Bruk started in all 20 games for Carroll and held opponents scoreless in nine different contests while also tallying seven points on the season (one goal, five assists).
Perry won his first Coach of the Year award after the Fighting Scots improved from a four win team in 2010 to a eight win team in 2011 and just missed out on the MWC Tournament. Perry’s Monmouth squad was picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll but went 5-2-2 in league play and finished fifth in the final league standings. He coached a potent Fighting Scots offense that finished tops in the MWC in assists per game (2.44) and second in goals per game (2.00).
Jackson Wilkins, Marc Robinson and Kellen Sullivan comprise a trio of Beloit players who were named to the first-team after they led the Buccaneers to a MWC Tournament final appearance. Wilkins finished the year tied for third in the conference in both points (22) and goals (nine) while Robinson was sixth in points (18) and tied for sixth in goals (8) for a Beloit offense that scored the fifth most goals in the conference (30). Sullivan led a Buccaneers backline that surrendered only 1.44 goals per contests and also chipped in three assists to the Beloit offense.
Jordan Wickman and Mark Gore joined Bruk with first-team honors for the champion Pioneers. Wickman finished in a tie for third in the conference with 22 points with nine goals and four assists, also scoring a league-best six game winning goals. Gore teamed with Bruk on a strong Carroll back line and also added three assists on the season.
Alvaro Calle was a first-team member after scoring a goal and chipping in five assists for Ripon while Chris Haught-Thompson is Lake Forest’s line first-team honoree after leading a Foresters defense that was tops in the league in goals allowed (14) and goals against average (0.70). Haught-Thompson also scored a goal and assisted on six others from his defensive position. Illinois C. goalkeeper Trevor Donahue rounds out the first-team after posting a 1.41 goals against average and four shutouts for the Blueboys.
