MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell and Lake Forest each picked up championships in the doubles portion of the 2012 Midwest Conference Championships held in Madison, Wis. Grinnell brought home titles in the No. 1 and 3 flights while the Foresters won the gold in the No. 2 flight.
Grinnell picked up the first championship of the night a day after winning the team title when the duo of Hanna Feldman and Julia Rumley won the No. 3 flight 6-2, 6-3 over the Carroll team of Julia Patzin and Amanda Weckop. The title team used a quarterfinal victory over Lake Forest’s Aimee Fadden and Lucy Cooper 6-2, 6-1 before a tight 7-5, 6-2 win over St. Norbert’s Ariel Bloniarz and Maggie Berens. This was the first doubles championship for either Feldman or Rumley and the eighth time in school history that Grinnell has won a No. 3 doubles flight championship.
Lake Forest won the next doubles tandem in the No. 2 flight as Grace Dowling and Gracie Mullins won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over the Grinnell team of Constanza Alarcon and Catherine Fitch. Dowling and Mullins got the day started with a quarterfinal win over Zippy Abdulmalik and Audtrey Brauer 6-1, 6-0 and then won a hard fought battle over the Carroll team of Megan Rosenberg and Kate Rasmussen 7-5, 6-3. The title is the second in school history in the No. 2 doubles flight.
Grinnell finished the night with another championship in the No. 1 doubles flight as the team of Shirlene Luk and Clothilde Thirouin downed Lake Forest’s Melika Celebic and Christi Valicenti in a hard fought three set battle 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Grinnell duo squeaked by Knox’s Dana Pierce and Charlotte Garvin 6-4, 6-4 before defeating St. Norbert’s Maria Slusarek and Nancy Chybowski 6-0, 6-4. This is the fourth time that Grinnell has won a No. 1 doubles championship.
The Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championship continues on Sunday when the singles champions will be crowned. The singles tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
