Monmouth Leads After Abbreviated First Day At MWC Women's Golf Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The first day of the 2012 Midwest Conference Women’s Golf Championship was shortened due to weather but nine holes of golf were still played and after the shortened round it was Monmouth leading the pack heading into the second day of action.

The Fighting Scots came in with a total of 172 which was only one shot better than the runner-up Grinnell. 2011 champion Carroll was in third play only six shots off the pace with a 178 while Illinois Col. shot a 198 to come in fourth. St. Norbert and Knox rounded out the team scoring with a 201 and 211, respectively.

2011 runner-up Mallory Messin came into the clubhouse with a nine hole total of 40 which was two shots better than her closest competition. Monmouth’s Breanne Ford and Hannah Long both recorded 42’s to tie for second place while Anne Begley (Monmouth) and Lauren Felton (Carroll) each shot a 43. Four players finished the abbreviated round tied for sixth with a 44 which included Autumn Neuhring (Carroll), Stephanie Spahr (Grinnell), Hailey Speck (Grinnell) and Amy Wareham (Carroll). Jessica Grigg (Illinois Col.), Kayleigh Kresse (Grinnell), Alex Plemmons (Grinnell) and Megan Shultz (Monmouth) rounded out the top-10 after the first nine holes after each shooting a 45.

The MWC Women’s Golf Championship will also be shortened tomorrow to only nine holes because of weather. The shotgun start will be at 9:00 a.m.
