ROCKFORD, IL – After being behind by 22 strokes on the first day of competition the Grinnell Pioneers were able to complete the comeback over the next two days and left Rockford as champions of the 2013 Midwest Conference (MWC) Women’s Golf Championship.
The championship is the first in school history for Grinnell and snaps a four year title run by Carroll. The Pioneers won this year’s event by nine strokes and finished with a three day total of 1,093. Illinois Col. led the pack for the first two days and held on for a runner-up finish with a total of 1,102. St. Norbert held on for third place (1,120) with Monmouth (1,122) and Carroll (1,154) rounded out the team scores.
Mackenzie Barker claimed the individual championship for Illinois Col. as she shot a third day low of 84 to win the championship by nine strokes over Monmouth’s Hannah Long with a three day total of 254. Kylie Swoboda (St. Norbert) finished in third with a score of 268 and was followed by Stephanie Spahr and Alexis Lintker (Illinois Col.) who both had a score of 269. Alex Plemmons (Grinnell, 271), Morgan Alewelt (Illinois Col., 272), Kayleigh Kresse (Grinnell, 273), Ashley Alfaro (Carroll, 275), and Abby Fish (Ripon, 279) rounded out the All-Conference team by finishing in the top-10 at the championship.
With the championship Grinnell earned the MWC automatic berth to the NCAA Championship that will be played in the spring (May 13-16) at the Mission Inn and in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
