GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell got back to its winning ways and used a day three charge to win the women’s title while the Grinnell men held the lead built up after two days to again sweep the championships at the 2013 Midwest Conference (MWC) Swimming & Diving Championships.
The Grinnell men won their 12th straight team championship with 923 points and were followed by Lake Forest with 827 points and Monmouth with 374 points. The Grinnell women picked up its 14th championship in the last 15 years with 892 points barely beating runner-up Lake Forest (875.50) and Monmouth (420.50).
Five more MWC records were broken on Sunday that include Garr Punnett in the prelims of the 200 butterfly where he also secured a NCAA “B” cut, Michael Brus (Grinnell) who broke a national record in the 200 backstroke with a NCAA “A” cut time, Alex Dunn (Lake Forest) in the 100 freestyle, along with both the Grinnell men’s and Lake Forest women’s 400 freestyle relay teams.
Alex Marks (Lake Forest) and Hayley Levin (Grinnell) both earned NCAA “B” cuts in the 200 breaststroke while Becky Shaak (Lake Forest) also earned a “B” cut in the 1650 freestyle.
Lake Forest Head Coach Vadim Tashlitsky was recognized as the Women’s Coach of the Year with Grinnell’s Erin Hurley receiving the Men’s Coach of the Year Award.
