St. Norbert and Monmouth Advance In Women's Soccer Tournament

DE PERE, Wis. – St. Norbert and Monmouth each earned victories on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2013 Midwest Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. The tournament was played in De Pere, Wis. and will conclude to the tournament final tomorrow night.

Monmouth earned the first win of the day in a close 3-2 contest where the 2-2 tie was broken in the 81st minute by Andrea Correa who pounced on a loose ball around the cage and beat Lake Forest keeper Rachel Tenuta to send the Fighting Scots to the championship game.

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the first half with Lake Forest taking the lead on two separate occasions. Holly Lesperance found the back of the net in the fifth minute for her 11th goal of the season on an assist from Michelle Greenway to give the Foresters the early 1-0 lead. Monmouth answered back in the eighth minute with Lauren Kellen’s 22nd goal of the season to tie the score at one.

Michelle Greenway gave Lake Forest their second lead of the game in the 13th minute when she capitalized on a loose ball around the goal for her 25th goal of the season. Kellen once again was there to answer for the Fighting Scots are her 23rd goal again tied the score in the 25th minute that set up the late second half dramatics for Monmouth.

Samantha Barranco earned the win for Monmouth making 12 saves while Tenuta recorded seven saves in the loss for Lake Forest.

In the second game of the day St. Norbert used a pair of first half goals to pull away from Grinnell and advance to the title game on Saturday with a 3-1 victory. Katie Vanden Avond was one of the most prolific goal scorers in the nation during the regular season and netted three goals to lead St. Norbert.

Vanden Avond opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she finished a cross from Shannon Jung for the 1-0 lead. She scored again in the 25th minute for what would be the game-winning goal on a shot from the top of the box and followed that with a goal in the 80th minute that sealed the game.

Grinnell got on the scoreboard in the 85th minute on a penalty kick goal from Patty Murphy-Geiss.

Sarah Platzer earned the win for St. Norbert and made two saves while Jordan Young took the loss for Grinnell making four saves in 45 minutes of action.
