ROCKFORD, Ill. – After rain delayed the start of the 2019 Midwest Conference (MWC) Men’s Golf Championship by a day, the athletes took the course at Aldeen Golf Club for 36-holes on Friday.
St. Norbert College shot the two lowest rounds of the day, as the Green Knights will head into day two with a team score of 615. However, the top five are separated by just five strokes with Knox College second at 619 and Lake Forest College at 620.
The Green Knights were led by Luke Bourneuf who sat in a tie for third after an opening round 75 but finished the day tied for first after dropping five strokes to finish with a 36-hole score of 145. He shot a two-under in the final round to card a 70, the lowest individual score of the day.
Teammate Eric Bagg had one of the most consistent days as he was fifth after both rounds. After opening with a 76, he recorded a 78 in round two to finish with a score of 154. Evan Van Ekevort also ended the day in All-Conference position as he is tied for ninth with a 158 while Jonathon Cone is one stroke back at 159.
Knox College’s Duncan Wheeler is tied with Bourneuf for first on the individual leaderboard to lead the Prairie Fire to second in the team standings. Wheeler had the second lowest score in each round as he opened with a 74 and closed out the day with a one-under 71.
Noah Manzo got off to a great start has he was tied for third after an opening round 75. Over the next 18, Manzo recorded an 80 as he ends the day in a tie for sixth at 155. Teammate Jason White sits just out of an All-MWC spot after dropping six strokes between rounds. He shot an 83 to start the day before carding a 77 to finish at 160 for 13th.
The Prairie Fire held on to its one shot lead over Lake Forest after both teams shot a 308 in round two. The Foresters have two golfers in the top five, led by Ricky Schmidt who moved up the leaderboard a spot per stroke. Schmidt shot 76 to sit in a tie for fifth after the opening round then closed with a 74 as he heads into the final round in third.
Teammate Jacob Krugman sits one behind with his 36-hole score of 151. He started the day with the lowest score of round one at 73 before shooting a 78 in round two. A third Forester finished the day in All-MWC position as Parker Hill shot matching rounds of 79 to sit in a three-way tie for ninth at 158.
Illinois College had the biggest team improvement on the day as the Blueboys shot a 310 for round two, a 21-stroke drop from their opening round score of 331. Bryce Oden and Louis Faivre both opened with 81’s before finishing with rounds of 74 and 75 respectively. Oden enters day two tied for sixth at 155 while Faivre is eighth just one stroke back at 156.
Monmouth College finished the day in fifth at 686, led by Nate Monroe and Sam Gillen. The pair had opposite days to end only a stroke apart at 168 and 169 respectively. Monroe opened with an 83 but added two shots over round two for an 85 while Gillen dropped five strokes as he shot an 87 and 82 for the day.
Rounding out the team standings is Grinnell College who are sixth entering the final round with a score of 691. Ravi Levens leads the Pioneers as he is part of the three-way tie for ninth. Levens started the day with an 83 but come back in round two to dropped eight strokes and move up seven spots with a 75 for a 36-hole score of 158.
The 2019 MWC Men’s Golf Championship concludes with round three at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
