ROCKFORD, Ill. – It was an historic day on the course at the Aldeen Golf Club for the Midwest Conference (MWC) Men’s Golf Championship. Lake Forest College broke the 18-hole MWC team record as the Foresters shot a 298 on the final day to win back-to-back MWC Championships. Knox College’s Duncan Wheeler claimed medalist honors after shooting an individual MWC record 221 for 54-holes.

Entering the final round, Lake Forest sat in third place, five strokes behind leader St. Norbert College. The Foresters top three golfers all lowered their scores on the third day to help the team break the one round conference record and tie the team’s 54-hole record set last season at 918. Head coach Brian Bruha earned Coach of the Year honors for leading the Foresters to their second MWC Men’s Golf Championship.

Like his team, Ricky Schmidt sat in third place, five back of the leader, coming into the final day. Schmidt delivered his best round of the tournament as he carded a 72. He finished with a score of 222 for second place and received Player of the Year honors. Jacob Krugman and Parker Hill also earned All-Conference honors as Krugman matched Schmidt’s 72 for a final score of 223 to tie for third while Hill shot a 76 to finish eighth at 234.

Schmidt finished one stroke back of individual champion Duncan Wheeler of Knox. In the top three at the end of every round this weekend, Wheeler headed into the final 18-holes he was tied for first with St. Norbert’s Luke Bourneuf. He managed to hold on to first place with a final round of 76 to finish with an MWC record 54-hole score of 221.

Prairie Fire teammate Noah Manzo earned Newcomer of the Year and All-MWC honors as he tied for sixth with a score of 233. Jason White missed joining Wheeler and Manzo by one stroke as he tied for 11th at 234. Knox came in third as a team as it shot a 313 on Saturday to finish at 932.

Coming off the lowest round of the tournament, Bourneuf entered the third round tied for first, unfortunately he shot a 78 over the final 18-holes to dropped down to fourth. His final score of 223 was still good enough to earn him All-MWC honors along with Green Knight teammates Eric Bagg and Jonathan Cone.

Bagg didn’t move out of fifth place all weekend as he shot a final round 76 for a final score of 230. Cove recorded his lowest round of the tournament as he shot a 78 to tie for with Illinois College’s Louis Faivre at 237. St. Norbert carded a 309 as a team on Saturday to finish as the conference runner-up with a total of 924.

Rounding out the All-Conference honors was Faivre’s fellow Blueboy, Bryce Oden, who shot a 78 on the final day to tie Manzo in sixth place at 233. As a team Illinois College came in fourth as the Blueboys matched the Prairie Fire with a score of 313 on the day and finished at 954. Monmouth College finished fifth with a final total of 1027 with Grinnell College completing the field at 1038.

The final award of the weekend went to Knox’s Elliot Bainbridge who was presented the Elite 20 Award as the student-athlete competing at the MWC Championship with the lowest grade point average. Bainbridge is a sophomore economics major.
