GRINNELL, Iowa – On October 9, the Midwest Conference (MWC) kicked off the 10th Annual Giving Challenge. Originally launched as the Canned Food Challenge, this initiative marks a decade of service with a new name this year.
MWC institutions are participating by collecting non-perishable goods and monetary donations to support local food pantries, shelters, and similar community organizations. Each donation is converted to an equivalency total: one for each canned good and two for each dollar donated.
In the first week of collections, the MWC collected an impressive $1,138 and 223 non-perishable items across participating schools.
Ripon College leads the standings with an equivalency total of 1,108, having collected 116 non-perishable items and $496.
Monmouth College ranks second with an equivalency total of 383 from 15 non-perishable items and $184, followed by Lake Forest in third place with 342 after raising $171 in monetary donations.
In fourth place, Cornell reached an equivalency total of 296 with $148 in monetary donations. Knox contributed 20 non-perishable items and $96, earning an equivalency total of 212.
Lawrence stands in sixth with an equivalency total of 158 from 72 non-perishable items and $43, while Grinnell rounds out the reported totals with an equivalency total of 10 from 10 canned items.
Beloit and Illinois College are also participating in this year’s Challenge but did not report collections for the first week.
As the Giving Challenge continues, we’re excited to see each institution’s generosity in action. Stay tuned for next week’s update as MWC teams work together to make a positive impact in their communities!
