GRINNELL, Iowa – Seeking its 14
th consecutive Midwest Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the Monmouth College men’s track and field team has taken a 26.4-point lead over second place Grinnell College after the first day of competition in Grinnell.

Ripon College is in third place with 39.2 points, and St. Norbert College is just behind with 38.2. Carroll University rounds out the top-five with 37 points.
James Wilson, Joe Ward, and DeAndre Smith all topped the podium for the Fighting Scots. Wilson bested teammate and defending champion Karston Anderson in the long jump by seven and ¾ inches after leaping 23’4.75”. Joe Ward took the top honor in the pole vault after clearing 14’6.75” and finishing with fewer misses than teammate Steven Andris and Grinnell’s Jake Lindstrom who also cleared the height. DeAndre Smith won the discus with a toss of 147’1” and finished second in the hammer throw with a 154’1” heave.
Wilson was also the top qualifier in the 100-meter dash (10.92) and the 200-meter dash (21.72).
Andrew Nottling of Carroll won his third consecutive MWC outdoor title in the high jump after clearing 6’8”. Fellow Pioneer Dakota Pruitt claimed the 1,500-meter run in 3:56.61, finishing almost six seconds ahead of Hayden Hoffman of St. Norbert.
Frank Canady of Grinnell made it back-to-back championships in the 10,000-meter run after cruising to a first place finish. Teammates Adam Dalton (31:46.39) and Ben Tyler (32:45.86) finished second and third, respectively.
Ripon College scored over half of their points on day one in the hammer throw. Austen Jentges won the event with a toss of 157’4” and Frank Stelter-Hogh placed third (153’3”). Thomas Beal took fifth for the Red Hawks with a 147’10” heave.
Cornell College's top-finisher was Charles Zilaitis, who took second in the discus with a toss of 146'. Lawrence University's JP Ranumas had the second-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdle prelim (15.83) and Cam Davies placed third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:02:69. Beloit College's points on Friday came from George Gray. Gray tied for eighth in the high jump after clearing 5'10 3/4". Ezekial Jere of Knox College scored three points in the 1,500-meter run after placing sixth (4:06.06).
Illinois College’s John Piper has the top qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdles (15.34) and Taylor Pasterski of St. Norbert leads the 400-meter dash qualifiers (48.32). St. Norbert’s Jack Feuerstein is the top qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles (55.88).
Day two action at Grinnell picks up again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with the men’s shot put.
